Enlighten me....what the heck is a coverlet?

I think of it as a light blanket...which vaguely looks like a thin quilt.. I have one at the foot of the bed, neatly folded, in a contrasting color to my main bed covering and which matches a couple of decorative pillows. If I get cold during the night, and I can easily pull it up. But, basically, it's just decorative. :-)

A coverlet is a light, small bedspread. It's often used as depicted below. It's mostly decorative but can be used for additional warmth of the feet and lower extremities. Alternatively, during hot months, it can be used as the spread when a normal bedspread or comforter is too hot. But it isn't as big as a full spread and usually won't tuck over the pillows or reach the floor. It will usually tuck in between the box and the mattress.

Thanks! Seems like a very overpriced sheet lol. I think I'm going to stick with searching for a duvet cover instead.

Anyone else on a redecorating kick as a result of quarantine?? ;)

In European terms, you could say it is decorative duvet. (Not a duvet COVER, because it *is* the duvet; it isn't meant to have a cover added to it.) Same size, same relative thickness. However, the filling it in it is normally NOT down; it is not meant to be that warm. In the old days it would have had a layer of thick cotton flannel sewn into the middle; these days the fill is usually washable polyester batting.)

The only time I remember hearing that term is in the Shirley Temple movie version of Heidi. She makes a bed for herself in the hayloft of her grandfathers house. The coverlet appears to be a quilt.
