England has problems with attacking cows!

What could be a more calming scene than the English countryside. I had no idea it was so dangerous to take a walk in the county.

The fact that they have them roaming freely is odd. I do not think I would want to walk where cows and bulls are not fenced in.

Whoa! I guess you truly do have to learn the rules to be out there, that and watching where you sit so you don't get bitten by a certain type of poisonous spider! That happened to my mom one time, poor thing. Bulls can be so scary though. I'd rather just give them a very wide berth!

We once crossed a field close to friend's country house. It was fine with the owner but he had some range cows out there. They clustered together when they saw us but one female started heading towards us slowly making lots of noise. I was told that she was the alpha female and that she was threatened by us being out there since there were calves. I never heard of such a thing but we moved on pretty quickly.

The problem is people using public right of ways that go through farms. Would you walk through a field with cows and a bull in it I wouldn't.

Wow! You've educated me. I did go for walks in the countryside around The Scottish Army Headquarters when I played in the Edinburgh Tatoo. I had no idea that farmers would be shooting birds among other dangers.

There were times I thought we were being shot at but they turned out to be 'crow scarers' - I don't know what the 'technical' name was, but they were things the farmers set up in their fields that let off a 'BANG' every so often. They sounded like a gun shot and all the birds would take off. They were there to stop all the birds eating the seeds planted for crops. But having one of those things go off when you were near by was

Actually, talking about this now makes me realise how many risks we took. I guess you don't really think of it being a danger because it's "just" a field...

I remember being shown the 10 different ways you can die on a farm the only three I can remember are these;
1 Poison
2 tractor accident
3 drowning in slurry.

I bet parents would freak if schools showed that video to kids nowadays.

I remember when on a school trip as a child walking through a field of cows that started charging towards us. We ran and luckly got through the gate. Don't think the teachers realised how dangerous it could be as they were laughing at us.

It might be more common than you think! It reminds me of something that happened to me way back when.

A boyfriend and I were, um, parking out in the country and his battery died. This was before cell phones. We started walking and just planned on knocking on someone's door to call the boy's brother to come help us. We walked up this long driveway to a trailer and it was pitch black. We heard a snorting sound and pawing... turned out there was a bull in the front yard! It was terrifying! We backed away slowly and fortunately nothing happened.

One of those things that's hilarious later.

The article isn't clear as to the description of this public path. A "public path" isn't necessarily a paved path. It can easily be a right of way in the middle of a field in which case you're the one roaming freely, not the bull!

I had an up-close encounter with a bull as a kid. A friend of mine lived in a rental farmhouse. The farmer kept cattle, but we never had an issue with crossing the field to her grandparents' house. Her mom preferred this to us walking on the road. We headed out, made it only a 100yds or so and heard something. Turned around and saw a bull coming our way, and he didn't look too happy with us. There had never been a bull in the field before. We ran and climbed up into an empty corn crib and he stood there, snorting and pawing, and 'stalking' us for what felt like a L-O-N-G time. By all appearances, he was NOT going anywhere. So, neither did we. It took a while, but her mom finally called over to the grandparents to send us home, realized we weren't there, and came looking. She ran off the bull and we used the road from then on.
