Engagement Ring

The band is yellow gold with ridged ends and the engagement band is the same. I remember us picking out the rings. The saleslady was so sweet to us. My dh went home on leave. While he was on leave, I paid for his wedding band, he came back and paid for my rings. When we picked them up from Dillards, I was so excited, that I made dh propose to me in the Ingram Park Mall parking lot in his mustang. I'll never forget that day. Now that we're back in San Antonio, when we go that mall, my kids get a kick out of going to that same Dillards where we got our rings. It's not the biggest ring in the world, but the memories involving how I received it and the love behind it, are more precious than the biggest rock on the Dis.

I didn't vote, because I didn't know if "another gemstone" was a good enough choice. IMO, a real engagement ring is the one where the recipient knows that it represents a commitment, and shows that the giver has an idea of what the recipient would like.

I never wanted a diamond. I figured it would stick out too much, I would get it caught in places, and a diamond was too typical for me.

Mine ring was $600. It it has a center sapphire, and on both sides are 4 diamond chips arranged to look like flowers. It is very flat in appearance, never gets caught or pokes me or DH and I LOVE it!

I inherited a typical diamond engagement ring from my Grandma, and I have never worn it because it is everything I knew I didn't want in a ring. I plan on taking the center stone and making a solitare necklace, and taking the two smaller stones and making them solitare earrings. But for now it is in a jewelry box.

When my husband and I was first married, a CZ is what I was given (I knew it and picked it out). We were both in our senior year in college and money was tight. It IS extremely pretty and my DH promised when we see better financial days we would upgrade to the real deal holy field. Well, many years and degrees later, better days are here. But something has happened to me the last 6 months - I've seen the movie, "Blood Diamond". That movie had a profound affect on me. One that I can't shake. Yes I do own REAL diamonds (although I'm more fond of Australian crystals). Australian Crystals sparkle even when dirty.

Our 10 year anniversary is around the corner (Aug 29) DH asked if I was ready to upgrade, my response, "NO WAY" - I really do love my ring - all 2 1/2 CZ carats. And the image of those little boys (fabricated or not) will NOT sit well in me. I think diamonds are beautiful, but deciphering between conflict/non-conflict diamonds is almost always impossible (with non-conflict diamonds intermingled into blood diamonds). So, today I am okay, although I did see a wedding set in Australian Crystals that was absolutely BEAUTIFUL and a little pricey too. We will see!!!

I didn't see the movie but I took a Humanities class in college and I remember our Professor telling us about the DeBeers Diamond Cartel and how diamonds could actually be worthless if they released for sale all of the diamonds that are mined each year. I never really cared too much about jewelry/diamonds before then, but that soldified it for me.

We were originally going to go with a one carat, but the site we ended up buying our diamond from had some interesting information on it. Apparently, there are price points at which the cost goes much higher. The one carat mark is one of these (they correspond with each half carat point). So we bought a .95 carat and saved quite a bit of money. It is nearly impossible to tell the difference between it an a one carat, but there is an extremely significant price difference. I never wanted a big stone. I just wanted a high quality ring. Unfortunately we have never been in a position to both buy the quality of stone/setting I want and to ALSO go on vacations.

So we have always chosen vacations. I would rather have experiences than things. Next year is our 25th and I've already told my dh I'd much rather have a really great trip to Italy than spend even part of that money on a ring.

I do have a very modest diamond annivesrary ring in a cathedral setting (which makes the stones look bigger than they are). It is fine, actually, because I have small hands and skinny fingers.

My original ring is a .67 marquise e/f in color vvs1. He wanted my to pick something much bigger but I wanted a house. I've since been upgraded several times. I have a 3 ct 3 stone band and a 2ct round solitare g/h in color vs1.

DGF will be getting (at WDW) a .65ct moissanite. I don't believe in buying diamonds - so this was a nice compromise.

After hearing about diamond miners, I'm not fond of diamonds either. I'd rather my DH spend money on something more practical.

I voted in the .75 less category, but I don't think it's small at all. I hardly ever wear my wedding/e-rings because of my job. Currently I work with handicapped preschoolers and I work with paint, etc.. and I can see it getting ruined all the time.

We actually talked about the diamond cartels in my Macroeconomics class. I really couldn't in good conscious wear something that could be a blood diamond. My professor talked about how the blood and legal diamonds are commingled and I would never know the difference. Who knew that business class would be that interesting?

I'm not much of a jewelry gal either, so DH understands.

My diamond is actually an antique setting.

If has the diamond band and the center stone is round but in a square top of white gold. There are two diamonds on both sides of the center stone.

The total weight is a little over one carat.

I love my ring, it means so much to me. My hubby asked if I wanted a specific diamond and I told him no. I explained that the only ring I wanted was my grandmothers ring that she brought over with her from Germany in 1936.

Am I the only one that thinks it's strange that someone's first post would be to resurrect a three month old thread? You'd have to do a search for a thread on engagement rings, right? You wouldn't happen to have anything to do with abazias.com would you? Sorry if I'm off-base on this -- it just seemed odd to me.
