mine is just over 1 ct. princess cut in a white gold setting.

My original engagement ring was a .48 carat oval. I did get to help pick out the ring. Last year for our 10th anniversary my husband upgraded my ring to a 1.1 carat round stone, with channel set diamonds on either side. I absolutely love it. He worked with the jeweler to custom design it and did a great job. I had thought about upgrading to a moissanite ring but I have to say I am glad my husband got the diamond. Lots of money, but, then again, I am worth it:laughing:

What is a moissanite?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_carbide

Moissanite is somewhat similar to diamond in several important respects: it is transparent and hard (9, although a patent states 8.5-9.25,[3] - note on the Mohs scale compared to 10 for diamond), with a refractive index between 2.65 and 2.69 (compared to 2.42 for diamond). Moissanite is somewhat harder than common cubic zirconia. Unlike diamond, Moissanite is strongly birefringent. This quality is desirable in some optical applications, but not in gemstones. For this reason, Moissanite jewels are cut along the optic axis of the crystal to minimize birefringent effects. It is lighter (density 3.22 vs. 3.56), and much more resistant to heat. This results in a stone of higher lustre, sharper facets and good resilience. Loose moissanite stones may be placed directly into ring moulds; unlike diamond, which burns at 800 °C, moissanite remains undamaged by temperatures up to twice the 900 °C melting point of 18k gold.

Moissanite has a slightly higher index of refraction (brilliance) and much greater dispersion (fire) than diamond.

Mine is an almost 1 carat (I think it's 0.9 something) round diamond with an additional 1/2 carat worth of channel set princess cut and baguettes on both sides of it...kind of like if a solitaire was set into an eternity band. The band is a full carat worth of the princess cut and baguettes. There are two princess cuts stacked vertically, then a baguette, then two more princess cuts stacked vertically, then a baguette, and so on.

It's a really pretty ring, I fell in love with it when I saw it on vacation, and DH ended up going back up there the next week to buy the ring. I didn't think it was too far out of his price range, but later I found out he borrowed money from his dad to pay for it so he wouldn't have to finance or charge it. EEEK! Had I known that, I would have freaked out.

Anyway, I've got big tater-pickin' hands, and it looks just right. :)

What is a moissanite?
I never head that term before so I looked it up.
What is Moissanite? Moissanite is a hardwood mineral discovered in a meteor crater by Nobel Prize winner Dr. Henry Moissan over a century ago. Apparently large trees were living upon the meteorite when it ploughed into the earth's surface and the heat, pressure and intensity of the impact caused the woody trees to impact into a mineral similar to petrified wood and nearly as hard as a diamond.
Interesting.

My engagement ring is half carat, my wedding band adds another quarter carat, bringing the total to .75 points. I couldn't pull off anything bigger even if I wanted to, my ring finger is a size 2.

Sweet story about my rings, if anyone cares to read. My husband went out looking, he didn't have the money all saved yet, so he was just getting ideas. He found the perfect set, but told the lady at the jewelry store he couldn't buy it, she told him she'd put it on hold just in case he got the money within the next week. He didn't, so he figured it was gone. When he did get the money a month or so later, he went back to the same store, the same lady was working. She told him it was odd because she usually just works the evening shift, this was at lunch time. He asked if the rings he had looked at were still available, she looked, came back, said so sorry, but no, they were gone. Then she said to wait a minute, she'd look to see if they were still on hold somehow, but told him she was 99.9% sure they would not be since they only hold jewelry for a week. 2 minutes later she comes back with what are now my wedding rings. She said they had gotten pushed way back in the drawer and was thrilled for him.
*sigh* Sometimes things do work out. :cloud9:

I hate the look of large rings. They look fake. I only wanted a small diamond. It is a 1/2 carat surrounded by tiny diamond chips. I get compliments on it still.

My engagement ring center diamond is about .75, and with all the little baguettes around it (and on my wedding band) makes it just under 1 carat total. I've seen some of those huge rocks lately, too.

Sounds like my ring. Just a smaller center diamond. I have never seen another one like it.

I told DH back when he was my boyfriend that I'd be very mad if he spent a lot of money on a ring. I didn't, and still don't, consider jewelry important. I'll spend a fortune at WDW though! :)

He bought me a beautiful emerald ring. I don't know how much he spent; more than he should have, certainly. You'd be shocked at how many people tsk tsked our love because he didn't shell out for a big old diamond.

I believe mine is 1.5 oval center and 2 .9 ovals on either side. It's a 3 stone ring in a platinum setting. DH picked it out all by himself and did a nice job if I do say so myself!

The only thing I ever said I wanted was platinum.

I have no idea how big my engagement ring is. I didn't pick it out and wasn't there when he did. I wasn't around when it was insured recently. I'm guessing its about 1/3 to 1/2 carat and then my wedding band is actually a wrap that has diamonds on both sides and is another 1/3 carat I think. My engagement ring sits up high because it's a marquis but fits right into the wrap.

I'm not trying to be mean but I've noticed several threads about engagement rings that you started. Why are you so concerned about what others are wearing? Are you trying to fit in? Please, please think about what makes you happy and it shouldn't be that your ring is as big or bigger than others around you. Think about what you can afford and if people are commenting on how small the ring is, then you need new friends or tell them to mind their own business.

All I wanted in the world was to marry my husband and really thought I wouldn't have an engagement ring and just have a plain band. There is nothing wrong with that. It really is about just getting what you can afford and building from there. I've never tried to keep up with anyone and won't start now when I'm starting a life with someone else. My best friend has a 3 carat engagement ring and drives a lexus. I drive a saturn and maybe a 1/3 of a carat. It just doesn't matter in the end.

I should explain my FIRST engagement ring was a small emerald...we wanted to buy a house instead of spending a lot on a ring. Last year dh got me THE MOST GORGEOUS engagement ring and diamond band too.

Timely question since I’m shopping for a new ring right now. I recently decided I wanted a new wedding set since I’m just not that in love with my current rings, plus I keep having problems with banging it on things since it’s set so high and I’ve had to have it repaired twice. But since I felt really guilty about replacing my original rings, I decided to at least keep the center diamond (small marquise) and put it in a new setting. So I went to a jewelry store last week and the woman kept pointing out how small the stone was. She was showing me examples of new settings and she wanted to drop a diamond similar to mine into the setting to show me how it would look, but she made it quite clear that she didn’t have ANY diamonds to use that were as small as mine (it’s just under ½ carat). And she kept saying that my husband REALLY needs to upgrade that ring. I was so insulted! I never thought my diamond looked all that small and now I’m ashamed to say that I’m a little paranoid that people think we’re poor or cheap or my husband must not love me enough! Anyway, after that I stopped by the jewelry store where my husband bought the ring and I didn’t realize they would apply my current diamond’s value to a new one. So I have an appointment with them tomorrow and I think I’m going to upgrade the diamond a bit. But I’m totally confused about whether to stick with a marquise or change to a round. And I don’t know what size I’ll get but I can assure you that the center stone will be under a carat – I’m way too practical to spend tons of money on some big rock.

By the way, I used to work with a girl who sported a ring that looked to be about 3 carats. I thought it was fake the minute I saw it, but she was always bragging about it. Turns out she had to take it in for a repair and they told her it was fake. Her husband actually bought a fake diamond and told her it was real. I would have been SO angry. I have no problem with fake stones, but to LIE about it!!! And if you’re going to try to represent it as real, at least make the size realistic!!!

One more thing... I don't know where that .75 figure came from as far as being the average size, but I find that hard to believe. And if it if true, it's sad to me that people feel that they have to have such large stones, especially people who really can't afford it.

When I was younger I wanted a huge ring, But now I am looking a getting a new set and I have found that I like the smaller ones better. I guess the bigger ones just get in the way. I have a 1carat that I never wear its too big.

I started with a 1/4 carat round. Several years later (while at WDW) I realized my diamond had fallen out. When we went to pick out a new one DH was pushing the 1 carats but they just weren't "me." I now have a 1/2c marquis with an anniversary band (7 smaller diamonds) -- wedding band in between. The 3 rings look beautiful together and it's definately me. ;)

Mine is a solitaire just under 1 carat. My DH friend was a jeweler so he made my ring, and helped us to choose a good quality diamond rather than a large one. DH wanted a bigger one, and asked his friend to keep the price to himself, but I found out anyway. It is simple and beautiful, and sadly I don't wear it often. I thought I lost it too many times when I was gardening or cleaning, so I put it away.

I didn't want an engagement ring. DH and I have matching wide gold bands. I think he felt like I was trying to save money at first but I had a big engagement ring from my first marriage (which is currently in storage for dd when she gets older) and I didn't want the same thing.

My mom has always worn a wide, plain gold band and her marriage to my dad lasted 40 years until my dad passed away. I decided it might be better luck for me to go with tradition this time around. :rotfl: So far, it's working for me!

Plus, I'm just not a jewelry girl. I'm always afraid I'll lose it or the stones will fall out.

The center diamond on mine is 1/4 carat, surrounding by 2 baguettes and 2 round stones. The total for the ring is only 1/2 carat. We got the matching band - sort of. It has 3 round stones and 2 baguettes for a total weight of 1/4 carat. So my entire hand is only 3/4 carat. It's exactly what I wanted.

When we first got engaged, I worked at a jewelry store. Dh put a large diamond on layaway for me (had to do layaway for my discount). I believe it was 1.25 cts. Anyway, it was just too expensive and another pear shaped stone came in. It was .69 cts and I picked out a wedding set to put it in and for only $200 more (for the stone and set) that he had already put on the other stone we could have and it was all paid for. I won. ;)

Anywho, dh never gave up on the bigger stone idea and got me a new ring for our 10 year anniversary. It's a beautiful princess cut, with 2 smaller princess cuts on each side.
