Timely question since Im shopping for a new ring right now. I recently decided I wanted a new wedding set since Im just not that in love with my current rings, plus I keep having problems with banging it on things since its set so high and Ive had to have it repaired twice. But since I felt really guilty about replacing my original rings, I decided to at least keep the center diamond (small marquise) and put it in a new setting. So I went to a jewelry store last week and the woman kept pointing out how small the stone was. She was showing me examples of new settings and she wanted to drop a diamond similar to mine into the setting to show me how it would look, but she made it quite clear that she didnt have ANY diamonds to use that were as small as mine (its just under ½ carat). And she kept saying that my husband REALLY needs to upgrade that ring. I was so insulted! I never thought my diamond looked all that small and now Im ashamed to say that Im a little paranoid that people think were poor or cheap or my husband must not love me enough! Anyway, after that I stopped by the jewelry store where my husband bought the ring and I didnt realize they would apply my current diamonds value to a new one. So I have an appointment with them tomorrow and I think Im going to upgrade the diamond a bit. But Im totally confused about whether to stick with a marquise or change to a round. And I dont know what size Ill get but I can assure you that the center stone will be under a carat Im way too practical to spend tons of money on some big rock.
By the way, I used to work with a girl who sported a ring that looked to be about 3 carats. I thought it was fake the minute I saw it, but she was always bragging about it. Turns out she had to take it in for a repair and they told her it was fake. Her husband actually bought a fake diamond and told her it was real. I would have been SO angry. I have no problem with fake stones, but to LIE about it!!! And if youre going to try to represent it as real, at least make the size realistic!!!
One more thing... I don't know where that .75 figure came from as far as being the average size, but I find that hard to believe. And if it if true, it's sad to me that people feel that they have to have such large stones, especially people who really can't afford it.
