Good morning!

Im having my first endoscopy this afternoon at 2:30. I'm already starving and it is going to be a looooong day!
Just wondering how others fared and what their experiences are.
Were you totally knocked out?
I had a colonoscopy two years ago and I was awake enough to watch the monitors and ask questions- I didnt feel a thing though. I'm a redhead though and apparently we have issues with anesthesia. I felt the effects of the anesthesia for about 48 hours after the procedure so I'm happy I have the weekend to relax.
Were you able to eat afterwards? Should I have my "driver" stop at the store to pick up anything in particular? Will it be hard/painful to swallow?
Thanks for any tips!

I've had several.
My biggest tip is already too late for you. Make it as early in the day as possible.
You will have a bit of a sore throat, Chloraseptic spray helps.

As for anesthesia and eating, I nap for a bit after, but not too long. Eating is a normal dinner, but again mine are done by 8:30 AM.

Hope all goes well. I have Crohn's and go through the various tests often.

I would have loved to have had an early morning appointment. Unfortunately, I was in line to take a cancelled appointment so I could get this done as soon as possible. I was originally scheduled for July 25th but Ive been in the ER twice in the past 2.5 weeks and just could not wait that long.
They started me on ulcer meds about 2 weeks ago and they have helped a LOT so I'm thinking it's ulcers.

Thank you for your post! A very good friend of mine has Chrons too. Shes been through a lot over the years! :flower1:

I asked to be put under..... did not want to gag. All I remember....
  • count backwards....
  • wakey wakey

I've had a bunch. I usually get a slight sore throat but I can eat. The only issue I have with the anesthesia is that afterwards I might cry for no reason a couple of times during the day. I'm usually very tired. Good Luck!

I never had a sore throats and I've had several EGDs. The worst part for me is getting the chills several hours after anesthesia. Other than that, I just have to sleep it off.

Good luck and I hope it's nothing serious.

Just seeing this. Hope it went well.

The only tip from when I had one was that when the doctor talked to me about the results I was not fully awake from anesthesia yet. I remembered talking to him but I had no idea what he said! I had to call again later! So I would just make sure to tell your nurse and doctor that you want to be completely, fully awake and alert before the doctor comes in to talk to you. I mean, like, sitting up awake and alert, aware of your surroundings, able to hold a conversation, etc.

I just saw this so it's too late for your "before" however, I agree with others - I was put out completely, so it was like Count.. wake up... I also 2nd Pea-n-Me - it's best to have someone with you to "hear" the conversation if possible.. if not, just call back and ask the Nurse to review the notes. I am very sensitive to Anesthesia, so they always give me something for Nausea which helps a lot. My throat was sore for a few days (I have Barretts so they had to do biopsy's) so something cool and soft for a day or so helps me. Good luck! I hope all goes well.

When I had mine, they told me I had to have someone else there. I wasn't allowed to drive myself home. So my husband was my ears/caretaker that day.

I, also, only remember "count backwards, ready to wake up?". I remember being helped out to the car, and sleeping the rest of the day away (in fact, most of the next day also). I don't recall a sort throat or anything, but I could have had one.
