End of May crowds?

I am wondering about the crowds and the temperature towards the middle or end of the month of May. Illinois State University finals are over at the beginning of May and I would be free to travel after that. Younger kids are still in school I would think, but are college kids down there at this time of year? And is the weather mild during this month? We fell in love with December weather and are worried about the heat during the summer months of june/july. Can someone give me some insight please? Thank you in advance!

We love going in May. We have been during the 1st week or two of May as well as the last week. The earlier in the month is less crowed, but we aren't talking big crowds toward the end of the month. Memorial Day weekend gets a little "cozy", but it is fine. Anytime in May is a great time!
