When we were in World of Disney on 2/19, we went up to a register as we had forgotten to present our AP on our purchase a few minutes earlier. The CM didn't know how to apply the discount so he called a manager. She said "well, I'll do it for you this time, but don't ask again because all discounts will be phased out by the end of this year." I asked if she meant AP discounts too, since I already knew about DC, and she said yes, that all discounts will be gone as of January 1, 2004. She said that since Disney is introducing the new Visa (which does not have such a great reward program I might add) they want people to use that and the only 'discounts' will be using reward points for merchandise. This does not seem to be a discount to me since I am not receving any money off of my total price. I asked her about this and she said she didnt' know all the details yet, just that no more discount cards of any type would be honored after this year.
Has anyone else heard about this? They already took away most DTD discounts for 2003, only leaving World of Disney, not Pooh Corner and the others listed in the 2002 book, which leads me to believe that this might be true. If this is true, I think DTD would see a lot less people as I know I usually go there to do my shopping with either the AP or DC discount. If I'm not going to get the AP discount next year then I might as well save time and do my shopping at the parks/hotels.

More disturbing that the loss of the discount to me is her snotty attitude. I would darn well speak to her supervisor...yes, I would call and complain! That kind of junk is for the birds.

Until it's phased out, she should cheerfully handle all requests. Sheesh! Bad customer service just burns me up.

I also save the majority of our souvenir shopping for DTD. DH goes golfing & myself and our 3 DD's go to DTD. What a bummer if they took away all the discounts.

It doesn't mean we won't souvenir shop. I would also just probably do the shopping in the parks when we see something we would like to have.

I guess Disney realizes that people are going to get souvenirs whether there is a slight discount or not. Everyone wants a Mickey tee or sweatshirt!! :D

This is the first of March, what will she say the rest of the year. By that time, with her attitude she probably will not be working there. I am one that is going to miss the DC discount. Just at DTD, it has saved us lots of money. I could only hope that they change their minds on this one. It is not like they are not making money on it. We are actually pay $29.95 for the discount.

I know I spent more on souveniers a/c of the discount. Ex: we bought our daughter one of the princesses outfits. $100.00 at least which included the works. I think I might have thought about it alittle longer without the 10% discount. $10.00 is $10.00 more that I just might spend at DTD.

Hmmm, I haven't heard that this is going to happend, but if it does, it would seem like a strange move.

With no AP discounts, they are less likely to sell APs. That, of course, means fewer return trips, food and merchandise purchases, etc. Espcecially damaging with tourism being down.

Further, as was noted, the Disney Rewards Visa doesn't really sound like a better deal than any other rewards card out there, so even some Disney fans who qualify for the card won't bother with it.

But it could be true. The AMEX discounts went away, of course, and apparently the Visa has no such discounts. AP discounts have been reduced, DC is going away. If they aren't eliminating them, they are certainly limiting them.

Just to put DW's mind at ease, the DC discount will still be around throughout 2003 at DTD, right?

Although we really missed the free MKC, we didn't really mind paying for the DC, as we always got our money back, especially at DTD. And we don't intend on getting the new Visa, either...

Even for our upcoming May trip, the DC card has practically paid for itself already, because the January DC newsletter had a Free Day coupon for Alamo, that knocked off $22.00. Combine that saving with the DTD purchases that we'll make, and we yet again come out ahead.

I also agree that the salesperson was rude and wrong. Her sentence just did not make any sense.

We have always put aside one day to go to DTD. First for the atmosphere - it really is quite visual. Second to buy some things and save the 10%.

We always bring back like 10 bags of pasta so I wait to buy them at DTD since I might as well save something.

If the discounts are totally taken away, then I will not buy as much at DTD, but will still visit if only to go to the Toy Story store which is just so cool!

I did order the Visa card -- but mostly because I had been looking forward to it since they announced the demise of the MKC. BUT I agree, I was disappointed at the terms.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Firstly they intend to phase out the Disney Club, which they already charge overseas people a substantial amount more than US residents, then there's this talk of possible annual pass discounts being phased out too, and to top it all off, they introduce a credit card 'replacement' to DC that is only available to US residents. As a (fortunate to be) regular WDW vacationer - and also been to DL Ca - and as someone from overseas I feel very frustrated, insulted and undervalued with these proposals. Should this rumour be confirmed I will most certainly write to officials voicing my displeasure.

I never was a member of DC, but I wish it was available to me now. I am considering buying AP's for our trip this year so that I might can squeeze in another trip or two next year. But, if all the discounts go missing from the AP's, then I won't buy one. I love WDW, but the policy changes of late make me a bit nervous about attempting to plan for future visits. Maybe we do need to go to Fan Fair or Branson next year instead. Mickey

I agree with #1mmfan-Disney Visas are also not available to Canadians. With our exchange rate right now I wonder if WDW will come up with something (not that I'm holding my breath).

I hope this isn't true. Buying an AP is becoming less and less of a good deal.

It is likely that the person was mistaken. The Disney Club Card will not be around past 12/03... and that may have been what she was referring to. However, I do agree, that until the discounts are not accepted, she should have applied the discount with a smile.

The discounts for AP's change from year to year, so no one knows what 2004 will bring. Until then, chalk it up to lack of knowledge and let it go.

I just had to jump in on this one.

I have been a member of MKC then DC for many years. I first learned of it through the Unofficial Guide over eight years ago when planning our first trip to the World. It has been the BEST tool to lure me to Florida. We originally came thinking this was our one trip down to WDW and we would make the most of it. Well . . . . you got us, hook, line and sinker!

Sometimes it isn't what you save in the end, but the process and perception of savings that you go through. Yes, it has most definately paid for itself every year (especially for the room deals). I am certain we would not have returned as often as we have without these discounts.

If Disney is listening, please take note. DH and DW travel with our five children . We stay for at least a week and half each time we come. We have always stayed on Disney property. Being exposed to the exceptional Disney facilities, we decided to buy in to DVC. We now have 200 points paid for, and have looked at adding more. We have addicted our children, along with us, of which one is a Pharm D and gainfully employed and will make her own trips down with her family to be in the future.

Whenever I used my card and saved 10% (which barely covers taxes on purchases) I felt like I saved a little something. We eat most all of our meals on Disney property. We save (just alittle) on our tickets. This trip, DH and DW will purchase AP's as we are planning to return within one years time frame and it makes financial sense. But we will by no means utilize these AP's anywhere near what your Florida residents will. (You win again).

But for the first time this trip, we are spending three nights at Universal. Why? Because they gave us a great deal. The CM that I spoke with actually "looked" for a special at the time we were coming and ended up cutitng my room rate in half. I can use my AAA card for that little 10% at many places in Universal and get the feeling I'm saving a little. They made me feel wanted.

We would prefer to spend ALL of our time at Disney . . . but you keep nudging us out. In all eight trips, the closest we have come to feeling like we received a little extra or that Disney was glad we were there, was a spectacular maid we had that would make towel dolls and fix our room up special for our little girl. She LOVED it more than going to the parks and thought we should bring the maid home with us! We tipped her accordingly. I should also note we have only stayed at Moderate and above properties. Poly, DL, OKW, BC, WL, and BWV.

I have never received a postcard in the mail offering us a special discount on anything. We have never had a CM pluck our child up for anything (not even a parade). We have never had a spot reserved for special viewing of anything. We have never had a meal comped (as we saw a table beside us receive). We have had three incidents of over charging and big mistakes on our bills that I spent hours resolving (and one never was, I lost $50 on that deal). Unless we are staying on points, it is always a hassle to check-in. This last trip we actually had a room that the manager (after three hours of arguing to get in contact with) said they would never use as a guest room again as it was so unsuitable (and this was at the BC at $200 a night). After traveling by air from the middle of the country, finding unsuitable lodging on reservations that were made months in advance is disappointing to say the least. I had a very similar CM encounter at DTD WoD when we were shopping last October. The clerks were LESS than cordial about our little discount.

And now they are taking my DC away. My DVC will no longer bring me a little discount as it has in the past. These little things I appreciated very much . . . and know that the rack rates, merchandise prices, etc aren't going down in price to compensate for it! This little discount I actually did pay something for!

I have signed up for the Visa card. I am not impressed at all with the verbal discription but will wait to read the fine print when I receive it before deciding to use it at all. But Disney you blew it. We love you because your special. I don't want to deal with an outside financial institution to receive a "benefit" from you. We overcame our fear and traveled for two weeks in December immediately following the 9/11. We spent oodles of our money on you and usually got our money's worth. But I don't feel like you appreciate us at all.

We will keep our DVC as I love OKW so much. Even as we get older and may not utilize the parks as much, I could stay at OKW as it's own resort and have a wonderful week. But you have opened the door for other areas in Orlando. Universal has our attention and it didn't use to.

Wow! That's so un-Disney like. :( I guess there won't be anymore discounts for us Canadians ... especially since the Disney Club is being cancelled and it looks like the AP perks are going as well. We're not elligible for the Disney Visa and there aren't any plans to introduce a card for us ... I might have to rethink one of my trips if this is the case :(

Excellent post, Swazie! Unfortunately, Disney really seems to be pricing themselves right out of our pocketbooks!! :(

I wonder if they intend to phase out only AP discounts on merchandise, but will also phase AP hotel disounts forcing us to use the Disney Visa.

LOL! The end of the year is a long time away yet. There's a good chance she won't even be working there "by the end of the year"!
