End of day and rider switch

A lot of people recommend getting in line for rides like SDD and FOP just before park closing if you can't get a FP, but am I right thinking that this strategy doesn't work if you will need to rider switch?

I did read a report where the switch was handled internally at the end of the day...but your mileage may vary.
