More good news in the ongoing saga of the Walt Disney World Tiki Room attraction: it will re-open in August with a copy of the Disneyland show, which is relatively faithful to the original. The Walt Disney World Tiki Room was something of an abomination, having been made over with new animatronics and awful new music and dialog. It caught fire early this year, and there has been lots of informed speculation that the re-opened show would do away with the widely loathed additions and return to its original glory. I grew up sitting on my grandfather's lap at the Tiki Room while he and I sang and whistled together to the songs and laughed at the corny jokes and I couldn't be more pleased to hear that the Tiki Room is going back to it roots.
The "new management" has been let go and the future of the Adventureland landmark is in the wings and wit of José, Fritz, Michael and Pierre - four crooning parrot hosts who ushered in sophisticated Audio-Animatronics technology at California's Disneyland in 1963 at The Enchanted Tiki Room.
In time for fall 2011 vacations, The Enchanted Tiki Room (as the Magic Kingdom attraction now will be called) is being prepared to reflect the show at Disneyland that represents a milestone in Disney theme park entertainment. While Walt Disney's creative team previously had produced movable figures, none had the sophistication of the bird-brained cast of the Tiki Room. José, Fritz, Michael and Pierre produce movements when solenoid coils hidden inside receive signals recorded onto magnetic tape and are regarded as the first "true" Audio-Animatronics figures.
I thought for sure it would be re-opened for our trip in two weeks so my husband is so very sad that we won't be able to see it on two consecutive trips.
Robo,
I know they're re-doing it, but how bad was the fire?
All we really know for sure is that if WDW returns the Tiki Room to its "original glory", then the show will be a total borefest and will have only a few visitors. Perhaps the new version will have a new sparrow in command of things!

I don't remember ever seeing the original version but my husband, brother and I all enjoyed the UNM version. Hopefully, they'll keep the best of both. DH is just a little sad that it's not going to be open for us in July.
I hate to say it, but I preferred the new version as well. Even though the original is much more nostalgic, it's also extremely boring. On the other hand, it sure makes a fantastic place to catch a quick nap.
Should be interesting to see what they do. Personally I think they should use it to experiment with some newer technology. Perhaps use holographic birds, and have more realistic events happening - like a holographic volcano erupting in the middle of the stage, while the birds sing away.
