DS(19) is at AIT training to be an EMT. He will graduate in March and plans to come home and hopefully get a job as an EMT while going to school to train as a Firefighter.

We will be doing some research into fire academies over the next few months for him so that when he gets home he has all the info.

Anyway, for Christmas, is there anything EMT related that I can get him? He does not want EMT pants yet. But what else could I get him....any ideas would be helpful and appreciated. TIA

I'm a wife and there have been a few things that my husband has wanted over the years.

~good stethescope
~special scissors for cutting clothes
~gerber multi-purpose tool
~smith and wesson knife (the kind that flips open)
~big mag-lite flash light

He's at work right now. I'll ask him when I talk to him if there is anything specific that he can think of.

In addition to the GREAT ideas by mytwotinks and Dan, there is also a lot of off-duty EMT apparel - like tee shirts, sweat shirts, etc. that he might like. galls.com has a great selection of things that an EMT might like.

That's a good idea too. There are a few stores on cafepress that sell EMT stuff.

a good duty belt. I had one that would velcro over my "under belt" so when I was sleeping or hanging around the station I didn't havt to wear all my pouches with the scissors/radio etc and when I got a call I just velcroed it on and was ready to go.

All of these suggestions so far have been great. I second especially the trauma shears, and if he doesn't have one already, a mini-flashlight in a holster for his belt.

Here's a great website for t-shirts, ornaments, all kinds of EMS goodies: http://www.emtcatalog.com/

Consider investing in a good long-term disability insurance policy. It's a physically demanding profession and not all employers offer adequate coverage.

www.galls.com

Lots of EMS/Police equipment/clothes/collectibles.

BTW, the disability insurance is a GREAT idea. I never even though of that ( & I are a Paramedic).

Your are only one really fat patient away from being on the sidelines for a loooong time.

Yes, disability insurance is a blessing when you need it. I did not have it when I needed it.

At 40, after 15 years on the job, I found myself out of work as a firefighter/EMT with 2 kids and a SAHM with just workers comp to support them. I spent the next year looking for a job and fighting for a disability pension.

It all worked out in the end but it was a very tough year.

I second Galls.com. My husband is law enforcement, FF, and an EMT. I also work in emergency services with other EMT's, FF, and LE. Galls is like a toy store for them.

Good for him that he's taking the class! DH is in his second round of EMT basic because he missed the final by ONE measly point the last go round.:upsidedow

I think (and you'd have to check with the stations he's going to try and get hired on at) you can get hired on a fire station and they will pay for your son to go to FF school. I know here, you have to have had a least FF basic and EMT basic to work at a fire dept. But if you already have EMT basic they will pay for you to attend FF basic. :)

Good luck and tell him to keep up the hard work! :thumbsup2

DS is a paramedic as well.. He said the things he likes the most that I got him were a large gym bag to have change of clothes in, a toiletry bag to keep in the gym bag so all his stuff is together and he can grab it and throw the whole thing in the bag if they get a call while he is cleaning up and also for the winter months he loves thermal shirts and pants to wear under his uniform.. I bought him thermal under armour last year and he now swears by that.

Not trying to steal the thread but do they not supply the EMT's with that sort of equipment?

I only ask as i'm about to start training/working as a UK equivalent of an EMT & we get all the stuff like that supplied to us. I'm just curious

OP, good luck to you DS:)

Some of it they supply, but he just wanted a nicer version and some they don't supply. It just depends. Some places supply all of the uniforms including new boots once a year and some you have to buy even the shirts you wear.

My dh also has a couple of places that he works prn so some of the things he just likes to have so he can take them w/ him wherever he is working.

The bag is a great idea! My dh has gone through many bags over the years. He likes the really big ones! With the weird hours there are lots of times that he needs to take whatever he is going to need for the next day when he goes to work.

Thanks for answering:thumbsup2. I can't believe you have to supply your own uniform in some places:eek:

My hubby is a Paramedic/Firefighter. He LOVES his LA Rescue Bags. Your DS will be able to use the bag to stash his stuff now AND when he's a FF. This shop also has tons of EMT stuff.

Happy shopping!!
