Is an empty clear sport bottle ok for carry-on?

Absolutely!

Thanks. To save some $$ on water, I bought some on clearance at CVS (2 for $0.83) and thought I could fill them up and keep them cold in the fridge in my room, then take one to the park in the morning and another one to a different park later in the day. The other 3 I packed in my suitcase, but wanted to take one with me to have until the suitcase arrives at the room via DME.

Thanks again!

I do it all the time. I advise putting the empty bottle in a clear plastic bag and putting it directly in the bin so that they can easily see that it's empty. Otherwise, they might open your carry-on to check if there's liquid in the bottle.

I've always got at least one in my carryon -- three (plus an empty sippy cup) if I"m traveling with the family. I carry Brita bottles that have the filter cartridge inside.

I've never been stopped except for one time when DS *SWORE* that he had emptied his out, but had not -- there was about an inch of water in the bottom. Somehow they can tell if there is liquid there.

PS: Just to be clear, you can carry on as much liquid as you like -- you just cannot take liquid through the TSA checkpoint unless it is medical or special feeding supply for a baby.

We usually take travel mugs with us when we fly. I aways take the top off and put the mug and top in a plastic bag so that the TSA can see that they are empty.
