Employee Bonus

I'd give the full-time person more and use some sort of formula. Either a percentage of gross pay, one month's pay, etc.

If it’s purely a Christmas gift, and not based on any performance/time/seniority factors, then I would make it equal. A check in whatever amount enclosed in a Christmas card with a personal note.

...and there in lies the rub.

I've been on every spectrum of this over my life. I've been given a holiday bonus based on my wage, a bonus for everyone, a days wage as a bonus and a gift card as a bonus. I'm also now a small business owner.

As an employee-
-I never felt bad or short changed having a bonus based on a percentage of salary/wage.
-I never felt bad or short changed having a bonus based on FT vs PT status off of salary/wage. FT got 20 hours bonus and PT got 8 hour bonus IIRC.
-I did feel slightly shortchanged one year when my employer decided to give everyone a $100 bonus one year. Managers, FT, PT, the per diem folks who maybe worked one 8 hour shift a month. I knew it wasn't owed but it did rub me the wrong way slightly. Almost everyone else was furious. Sort of like a Clark W. Griswold moment.

As a small business owner, thanks to the current nonsense at the federal level, I don't have any direct employee issues like that to deal with right now. Here is what I did for a 'gift' this year: I'm giving out bottles of Johnny Walker Blue label to the folks who are going above and beyond. The other guy is getting something in the $50~ range. Compensation is already above and beyond anywhere else but for me the 'gift' is just a way to say thank you.

If I had direct employees I'd base it off their salary and status full time vs part time ect. I would probably still include a nice bottle of alcohol too.

Just be careful if it’s a “gift” rather than a bonus. The IRS only allows $25 pp as a deductible business expense for gifts. We always run ours as a bonus through payroll so it’s fully deductible. This also means taxes are paid on it so you might want to factor that into your decision.

My employer gives a SMALL holiday bonus, based on how long you've been an employee. FT/PT both get the same amount.

If it’s a bonus the full timer should get more.
If it’s a gift, equal amounts.

My company gives holiday bonuses that are equal across the board and based on how well the company did that year. You also have to get a favorable performance evaluation to qualify for the bonus. This year our bonus was $1,000 before taxes.

My company doesn't offer any benefits, ie: sick pay, vacation pay, holiday pay etc..But we do get a Christmas Bonus that is run thru payroll so taxes are taken out.
When I first started work there each employee got $25 for every year they had been with the company. Somewhere along the line it went up to $50 per year worked.
It is a small company with a big turnover so there are only 4 or 5 employees that get a really good bonus.

That is a GREAT gift for special performers!

I’d love to work for a company that gave any sort of Christmas gift or bonus....

Sadly, my global Fortune 500 company doesn’t give squat....

I too have never worked anywhere that gives out a Christmas bonus. I think the biggest thing we ever received for Christmas was a coffee mug one year.

I work for a Fortune 500 Company as well and all we get is a $25 gift card to Walmart. Of course I take that card and turn it into a Disney Gift card for our trips!! :rotfl2:

The company I work for gives generous bonuses and I don't discuss what i get with anyone, it isn't asked of me but that is how I am (Same goes with my salary.)
Same here, it may be old school, but I don't share the info. What good could come of it? You either make the other person feel lousy if you make a higher salary or become po'd if you learn that others make more. I try & stay in my lane!

I agree with this.

What sort of bonus is this? Holiday? Year End? Performance?

What is the budget you are thinking?

Cash bonus?
This is a Holiday/Christmas bonus only-nothing to do with merit or performance.
The employees are both new to him (ie: less than 6 months).
We are open to a cash bonus plus a gift/gift card, but are having a hard time coming up with an amount & keeping it even between them or doing more for the full timer.
They are barbers, so they do not have a set weekly salary.
Thanks for listening :)

Hmmmm. I need to think about it more.

I am part time (the only part timer). I get the same bonus of the full time peeps but I never discuss it with them. I am the only one with my degree.

I work a lot of times on my days off so I save the company tons on OT or being a employee short. Normally all last moment call offs.

And I am asked each year if I would like to work full time.
You should get the same, you are so flexible & a huge asset!

What a shame. Corporate greed is rampant. It is disgusting when these massive companies don't give a hoot about the people that make them successful. I bet every executive got their bonus & I bet those checks had a comma (or 2 or 3) in them!
