My DH is a small business owner with 2 adult employees. He wants to give them each a bonus. One person is full time (5 days per week) & the other is part time (1 day per week + as needed).
Opinions- should their bonuses be the same amount or should the full timer have a larger bonus?
I have my opinion & am curious if I am in the majority or minority on this subject.

As a small business myself, we have 15-20 workers, a mix of employees and contract workers. We do the same amount for all, it's difficult some years because 15-20 times any amount is a lot.

My husband and I were trying to figure this out last night. We have key employees who are worth more to the company than others and deserve a bigger bonus. I think number of years with the company is also a factor.

My husband thinks we can ask them to keep it confidential. I’m not sure that’s appropriate.

I feel like the full time employee should get a larger bonus than the part time employee. The company I work for gives generous bonuses and I don't discuss what i get with anyone, it isn't asked of me but that is how I am (Same goes with my salary.)

Is this a performance based annual bonus type of thing of more like a Christmas bonus? To me, that makes a difference. We do not give Christmas bonuses, but rather the bonus is once a year after fiscal year end and is based on level, performance, etc.

I have a friend who works for a small business, 12 full time employees. They get one month's pay as a bonus at the end of the year. However that isn't just a Christmas bonus, it is also compensation for the fact that they don't get paid vacation time. They can take all the time off they want for vacation, they just don't get paid. They also didn't get paid sick time, but California law now requires 3 paid sick days, so it was compensation for that too.

DW and I used to get Christmas bonuses, it was a weeks pay, but those bonuses went away in 1999.

So I'd say a weeks pay is fair for a full time worker, and for someone who works part time too, but no less than $100.

I think it depends on the budget. If he's thinking $50 gift cards, same for both. If it's more substantial, I would think the full-timer should receive more.

I agree with this.

What sort of bonus is this? Holiday? Year End? Performance?

What is the budget you are thinking?

Cash bonus?

Hmmmm. I need to think about it more.

I am part time (the only part timer). I get the same bonus of the full time peeps but I never discuss it with them. I am the only one with my degree.

I work a lot of times on my days off so I save the company tons on OT or being a employee short. Normally all last moment call offs.

And I am asked each year if I would like to work full time.

I guess for me it depends on if this is a bonus or a thank you and it’s the holidays thing.

Most companies do a set bonus per band or as a percentage of salary. That keeps it equal in a sense but not necessarily to the $ amount. If you’re just going to give a >$100 or so gift card or something then I’d do the same for both and be done.

I guess it depends on what the bonus is based on. If it's just a 'gift' then they should be equal. If it's based on performance, then it should be based on that, and probably means the full time employee would get more since they work more.

This would be strictly a Christmas gift.

I've worked for many small companies over the years - the christmas bonus ranged from nothing to honey baked hams to 100.00 bonus. My fav was always the 100.00.
For that company, they gave the part time person 50.00 and all full time folks 100.00.

I'd give the full timer more. Probably not five times more. But more. But whatever you do, don't give a one year membership to the jelly of the month club. :)

You can ask them to keep it confidential. But the bottom line is they won't.
