My wifes birthday is today and today she got a call that her mother passed away!

We are now stuck in calgary and need to get to Halifax. westjet and air canada are both booked up until Dec 26th.

The only flights we found were business class to Saskatoon for 6000.00 each! Does anyone have any idea's on how we can get home!

:grouphug: I'm so sorry for your loss. I have never travelled by air in Canada, so can't help you out ... Sorry. I just wanted to send my condolences to you and your DW. Is there an American city that you could drive to and fly out of? Sending prayers your way.

Expedia
I just looked and saw Air Can for $1,115 per person rtn which I know is still costly!

My Condolences...I've lost a Mum, it's a major heartbreak in life. :sad2:

:grouphug: So sorry to hear about your loss.

Ask the airlines for their bereavement rates.

Yes; call both Air Canada and WestJet. Both airlines offer bereavement flights (even if they are booked up).

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

called westjet, they don't offer standby and they are all full up! The person on the phone told me to keep my eye on the "website" incase someone cancels. OMG she just didn't say that did she?

I asked if there was a list we could get on, nope!

Air Canada is next, i know they do standby but they always oversell their flights so i don't think that's going to work!

i have checked Via Rail... nothing ...

It really doesn't look like i am going to be getting my wife home to say goodbye to her mother.

Have you looked into Continental, United, or Delta? You would have to fly to a US city and then back into Canada to go to Halifax.

I would call them, and see what they can do for you. They all offer bereavement fares.

I just looked and Air Canada has seats today. It might be the return that is the problem, I'd call and ask them. Maybe you'll have to take one carrier to get there and another to get back?

You could also ask them to check in and out of Edmunton, it's only a few hours of driving and if they can get you in and out of there, it might be well worth it.

So sorry for her loss. :grouphug:

Select C$1466 YYC to YHZ Delta + others LAS, BOS Thur-Fri, Dec 21-22 6:35p-12:09p 14h 34m Coach overnight flight,
long layover

Sorry for your loss.

Another solution - Get in the car and start driving, sure, it'll take 6 days, but do you want to get there or not?

When my mom passed away my brother was away on vacation and it took him 5 days to get home. In a case such as that the funeral is usually put off for a few days until all family members can arrive. I'm sure you'll find a way. Take care.

So sorry for your loss. If you belong to CAA, maybe you can get one of their travel agents on the case? Or if you don't call a travel agency? They probably know a lot about booking flights that will help, especially if you are having no luck with the airlines directly. Like someone said, maybe you can connect through another city, since there seems to be limited non-stop flights between Calgary and Halifax. Good luck and my condolences.

Sometimes the airlines will have bereavement fares. So i would call and ask.

When my SIL was killed last spring, I called the airline to enquire about bereavement rates for a flight from Toronto to Victoria. I was told that any discount is only on full fare rates. Booking on my own was a much better option.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It's bad enough anytime but at Christmas it seems so much more poignant.

I would talk to a travel agents. They are the experts.

What terrible news, i'm sorry for the loss your wife is experiencing. As a previous poster suggested, try expedia.ca. There seems to be a variety of flights available as soon as tomorrow for under $2000 return/person. Take care of your wife. It's just money, whats important now is that your wife can say goodbye and be with family right now.

I was going to suggest this also as they may find some charter seats. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Try westjet from Edmonton to Toronto and then Air Canada from Toronto to Halifax.

They are showing some seats.

I haven't read the rest of the thread, but only WestJet still offers bereavement flights. Air Canada eliminated them earlier this year or last year (I don't remember).
