DH just got me a new laptop  and he is getting it all set up. It has Windows 7 and he has just informed me that it didn't come with Outlook Express like apparently every other Windows version we have had. So he wants to know what others have used for a FREE email program? I am a changeaphobic so I really would like something as close to Outlook Express as I can get. I need to have my message rules and folders at the very least.

So far he is looking at something related to Firefox?

I use Windows live mail. its from hotmail.

Options would be hotmail, yahoo or gmail. Gmail is very easy to use. :)

I am not looking for a email provider (gmail, hotmail, yahoo)--I have that. I just need the program that my emails download into from the server and I use to read, organize and compose them. That is what Outlook Express was for. I don't want something online-- I need a program that is on MY computer.

Does this make sense?:confused3

Then I guess Windows Live Mail is what you want. That should be installed already on your computer. It's on mine and I have Windows 7 too.

I haven't used it as I use Gmail for all that. I will have to see what is different between the too because I don't quite understand what you are looking for.

Ok, I get it now (I think). Check out Windows Live Mail. I just set mine up to run with Google. So now if I want I can do everything from there instead of logging onto Google. Is that what you meant?

I use (and love) Thunderbird by Mozilla. It's the same company that makes Firefox.

You can find it at:

That is the one DH was looking at. Can you sort all your messages and have multiple folders?

I think that is what I mean! He said that is the other option. Same question as above. I have a gmail account for some other stuff but don't like their way of sorting things at all. I like my nice neat folders that I can click on.

I WANT MY OUTLOOK! :headache:

I'm another big fan of Thunderbird. Use it for everything, and you can get an add on (Sunbird, I think) for calendar, too. I've found it works just like Outlook, so much so that my wife didn't realize it was a different program.

Yes, you can have different folders in Live Mail. I have four different email accounts going to it with messages filtered to different folders for each account. It through me for a loop when I got a new computer too, but it is very similar to Outlook once you get used to it. The hard part is figuring out where they put everything. Good Luck!:thumbsup2

I use Yahoo for my mail organization. You can make all the folders you want, access your folder from any on-line computer. It will keep all your contacts and they also have a calender. You click on the date in an e-mail and you can add it to you calender. Sends you e-mail reminders, repeats, send invites, you can even use Auto Sync to sync with your Outlook. The best part is there is no limit. It won't clog up you computer. It's not as easy as Outlook. I also down loaded my Outlook from an old desktop. Hey I paid for the right. I think it's OK I registered it on line.

Windows Live Essentials 2011. This contains Windows Live Mail, and many other programs if you want them. I would suggest keeping Live Mesh as well as that will automatically backup 5GB of data for you and allow you to remotely access your PC anywhere in the world. (As well as access your data if you just want to get to that) Picture Gallery too.

Windows Live Mail, which is the replacement for Outlook Express, Movie Maker, Messenger, etc. have all been removed from Windows 7. You need to download them.

Absolutely! I downloaded it years ago when my Outlook crashed and I lost everything. I didn't feel comfortable trusting it again. Paranoid, I know.

I found that I actually like it better than Outlook. I think it's much more customizable. To be honest, I don't know much about setting things up on it. My DH handled that for me. But I can use both my home email (DH runs his own email server, he's in IT) and my work email without a problem.

Good luck finding your "perfect solution!"

PS - my DH just said that Windows Live Mail is much more similar to Outlook Express than Thunderbird. I don't know. All I know is I'm not much of a Microsoft fan! LOL The big negative thing I've heard about Windows Live Mail is that they changed the layout severely - like they did to the Office Suite when they changed between 03 and 07. I've not used it, but I guess the big problem is finding where things are.

Yup, if you want something like Outlook, then Windows Live Mail is your answer.
