Elevator Etiquette!! GRRR!!!

I am usually a very patient person but.....

I was alone on the elevator, standing right in front of the doors. The doors opened and I went to step off, and a woman just about ran me over to get in!!! I thought it was common courtesy to let people off before others start to get on!!

Any other elevator etiquette guidelines we should all remember??

Don't eat beans or cabbage the week before getting on the elevator?

you know that and I know that...but many other people don't.

I've gotten knocked around so many times when on the elevator here at work...are you THAT anxious to get to your desk.

Let people out before you get in , and please don't let your toddler press all the buttons to the different floors. My Grace tries to do this and I have to hold her back literally.

The rudest thing I ever encountered in an elevator was here in my office building. I was already on, and saw some guy running to catch up with it, so I held the door open for him. He got on, never bothered to say thanks or anything, and never looking at me, said, "fourth floor" in a real demanding sort of way.

I just looked at him and said, "excuse me, did you think I actually work ON the elevator?" I seriously think he thought that was my job, like the old timey elevator guys.

It's not just elevator etiquette, either. I don't know how many times I've been going through doors (well, I do open them first) in public buildings and the person in front of me drops the door as opposed to handing the open door to me. And I don't mean that they don't hold it open so I can walk in before them, but lets it close in front of me. Sometimes the person in back of me is too far behind me to do that, but if they are right there I try to be polite.

We have quite a few people that work in our building that english is not their first language. They are all from the same country. I have been in the elevator with about 4 of them and they are talking to each other in their native language. I was the only person that couldn't understand what they were saying-- I found that very rude.

You would be if you had my former boss! LOL! She was a lateness freak! She would randomly pick an employee's desk to stand at in the morning on a whim. You hoped it wasn't yours too often. Ha! As far as elevator etiquette goes, exit-ers go first, after that everyone can pile on, but only in this order: children & their parents (strollers included), the elderly, then everyone else. Also as far as EXITING the elevator, it is common courtesy to let the person nearest the controls (the buttons you push) exit first. Then from that side to the opposite, everyone exits from the front to the rear.

I always thought it was common courtesy for elevators, and any other doors, that people exiting go first. I guess some people are just always in a hurry and can't wait an extra 2 seconds.

I can't file this under Elevator Etiquette, but rather Office Etiquette - please walk the way you drive! In other words, if you drive on the right side of the road, then you should walk on the right side of the hall.

Oh, and PLEASE don't cut the corners short - can't tell you how many times I've been run down by people barreling around corners!

This is a little pet peeve of mine. Because it bothers me so much, I have taught my DS from the time he was 3 (almost 10 now!) about Elevator rules (always let people off before you get on) and Escalator rules (stay to the right, do not stand two across-unless child is so small that hands need to be held - leave the left lane clear for those in a rush who want to walk up with the escalator). He used to "tell" me in that "oh so quiet -NOT" voice that children have, whenever he saw someone not obeying the rules.

Common courtesy needs to be taught by word and example!
