I am one of the room moms for my DD who is graduating elementary school next month. I would like to do something special for the class since it is their last year at the school.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some budget friendly suggestions for a lasting gift for each of the kids.

Thanks

I loved what my younger daughter's kindergarten teacher did for their graduation several years back. they took digital pictures and some class videos throughout the year and then burnt CDs for each of the class members. Its a great way to remember the year.

We took a picture of the kids on the fifth grade trip and then got copies made of the picture-put it in a frame with a big mat and they had all their friends autograph the mats. We also bought baseball type hats from oriental trading with their graduation year on them and they got those signed by friends too.

My DS's 5th grade teacher did this last year, it was really nice. She also had all of the kids sign their names and had it put on a canvas in the schools' colors, I'm not sure exactly how she made it though.

When my son graduated 5th grade last year, one of the moms bought each child an "autograph hound." It was a stuffed white dog made of smooth fabric (no fur) and wearing a little graduation cap. Each child was able to gather autographs from their classmates and teacher. I don't know how much they cost or where they got them, but I can't imagine they'd be more than a few dollars each.

That is what we are doing this year!
We got little ones at Party City for $2.99 each.
They had bigger ones at Build a Bear for $5 and even larger ones at Walmart for $10.

But, the $2.99 ones were just the right size.

How cheap? One time I made cupcakes and topped each one with a graduation rubber ducky from Oriental Trading. The duckies were their gifts.

Another idea, not quite as budget: Get a pillowcase for each child. Purchase fabric markers and let them have a signing party. It's best if you take the cases home to make sure the marker is set properly. If you want to spend more, take a class photo and buy iron-on paper, adding a class photo to each pillowcase before the signing.

How about a t-shirt w/ the middle school name/mascot on it? We get them for $5 each.

It would be cute to do tshirts w/ the MS on the front and the elementary on the back (where I'm going , where I've been.)

This was my original plan, the room mom's did it for DS in kindergarten. I may still do this one too, but I am not sure I have that many pictures to put on to a DVD. You just don't get to go into school as much when your room mom to 5th graders:(

Our school gets t-shirts for the graduating class. They kids all sign each other's shirts.

Also, if I can get enough pictures from the graduation ceremony (making sure I get at least one of each child), I was thinking of making a slideshow (setting it to "we Go On" from Illuminations) and burning it onto a CD for each student. My problem is that I don't want to spend the graduation worrying about making sure I get pics of every kid. I want to enjoy the event. I guess I could try to enlist the help of other parents andask them to email pictures to me after the ceremony.

I like this idea too!

Last year for my DD we (classroom Moms) did the CD thing. We asked each parent for a baby picture and any pictures they took over the 6 years at field trips, holiday parties, etc. We also asked previous teachers for their pictures or CDs from the year our group was in their class. At the luncheon when each child was introduced we did a split screen of the baby pic, kindergarten pic and and 5th grade pic. Then we tried to use as many pictures from the parents as many people had never seen those pictures of say a 2nd grade field trip. The result was amazing. We watched it over the winter again and laughed and cried it is so worth it to do a CD project.:)

It's not a gift idea, but a memory--and it's free! At my DDs elementary school, the 4th graders (K-4 Elementary, 5-6 Middle, 7-8 Jr. High, and HS here) take a "last walk" through the halls of the school. All the classrooms of younger kids line the halls and "wave" them out on the last day of school. It can be very moving for the kids (and teachers!) who have attended the school for all 5 years. We moved here when my DD was in 3rd gr. so it wasn't as special to her, but I thought it was a really neat idea for a school tradition. Usually elementary schools don't really have "traditions" the way HS does. Even though we weren't as attached to the school as some others, I got a little misty eyed seeing all the kids changing into Middle Schoolers right before my eyes!

The $5 is front only, single color on solid shirt. It's the going rate around here for bulk orders. There are several local silkscreeners who will do it for that price. The front back would be more so that's why we just do the front :)
