Really? I think it's crazy and over the top. What's wrong with the explosive tests that they were already doing? What's wrong with the scans they do to see what's inside of everything?

Clearly people shouldn't be allowed to take dangerous items on planes, but a phone that doesn't work is not dangerous. Why can't the airline hold the non working item until you disembark? That way you don't get anything confiscated, but you don't have access to it to "set off a bomb" during flight

The article that PIO linked to a bit further up explains that the US government got a tip off about a potential terrorist attack using hollowed out phones to conceal explosives. I'm not sure to what extent their current security measures are able to find things like this, so I'm happy for them to check my electronics until the threat is gone or they can come up with a better way of doing it.

Can somebody update this post as to whether they had to do this? My travel insurance app posted some info stating that we have to prove our devices are working, and to expect lengthy queues. That's 4 iPads, 4 iPods, 3 phones, two cameras one video camera. Our carry ons will be taken over by chargers

I don't think anyone has been recently

I will post about my experience in a month's time, but until then I think the safest bet would be to be prepared to have to do this. I totally understand about the being taken over by chargers thing!

I was in the USA when this was announced - and it was very much centred on the mobile phone bomb fear and the feeling that some airports do not conduct proper security checks - maybe the press likes to sensationalise?

Signs were going up in the USA airports but I was flying on domestic routes and out of the country and no body cared about those - which seemed to a be a gap to me - to assume that the only source would be someone from Europe/middle east/Africa on an inbound international flight. I wonder that they surely can't be thinking that those are the only routes bomb carrying terrorists would fly?! I suppose they believe they will pick up a home grown bomb with their body scans and bag checks and I agree with the others - better to be safe
