This spring is my 25th class reunion (class of 90 rules!!). Good, in that I am excited to see and reminisce with my old friends. And Bad, in that OMG its been 25 years since high school! My husband (and HS sweetheart) and I have been flipping through the yearbooks and having a blast looking at all the 80s styles we used to wear!
My husband had a picture perfect Mullet (or Hockey Hair, is what we called it), and my hair... I don't know how I was able to hold up my hair it was so Big! All the spiral perms, and hairspray! At one point, I was going through 2 cans of hairspray a week! We called the bangs "mall bangs" in central NY. My bangs were a huge poofy mass, that wouldn't move in a hurricane, and during my senior year would touch the roof of my car! And there were some girls whose bangs were 8 inches straight up! I will post a picture later, its insane!
Anyone else go through the eighties with high hair? What were some of the "fashion dont's" in your area?

C/O 88 here! My hubby of 24 years is C/O 87. We've never been to any of our reunions though because we are still friends with those we care to hang out with. Everyone else... meh.

When I met my hubby in my junior year, he had a mullet, a rat tail and wore white jeans. I, on the other hand, had big hair, a "Flashdance" sweatshirt hanging off of one shoulder (white w/ purple writing) and I was sporting my leg warmers. Oh, and I STILL have some of my rubber bracelets

One of our favorite shows on TV is The Goldbergs. If you've never seen it, you should try to catch some episodes. It's like reliving the 80's for 30 minutes each week and it constantly reminds us of things we've forgotten. Those were the days...

Class of 89, whoo!

At Easter my aunt and I were talking about Wigwam socks. I had so many of those, in so many colors. And I would wear them in alternating layers, with pegged jeans and ankle boots. With matching layered tank tops under a big shirt. And a studded belt. And a spiral perm held back by a bandana. And oh lord, the Wet N Wild eyeliner.

We will not discuss the prom hair. My goodness.

I watch The Goldberg's too, oh the memories....

My favorite is my husbands short short's. cracks me up overtime I see a pic.
Yes, my poodle perm was just too much. I thought I looked great too........

I'm right there with you. '86 here so it's been 30 years. If there is a class reunion (graduated with a bunch of slackers), I still won't go. Why break my perfect record now. Most of my friends were older and wouldn't be there anyway. I had the big poodle perm hair too. Man I hated jelly shoes. Those things hurt to even wear them and made your feet sweat. LOL. Don't forget mini skirts. Those were big then too around here. And Ked's. Much more comfortable than jelly shoes though.

Wow. I guess I am the only one who has never had a mullet. My husband hasn't either. And I honestly didn't know anyone back then who did. I guess it was just the people I hung out with.

In the early 80s I had the Dorothy Hammil (sp?) cut. Other than that, mostly feathered hair, like the rest of the girls in my class!

Let's see:

Rainbow Jeans
Rainbow shirts
Headbands
Candie's sandals
roller skate sandals!
Definitely perms
High Waisted pants
Leg warmers

I missed both my tenth and twentieth due to having newborns. My twentieth was literally the weekend immediately after my youngest was born, even.

I shall have no such excuse for my thirtieth, barring a freak occurrence. Ha!

Wow. I guess I am the only one who has never had a mullet.

Nope. I never had one either. I said I had a spiral perm. I did know some people who had them, though!

Did you graduate in 91' because my class reunion is this year also and it's our 25th. Wouldn't it be your 26th if you graduated in 90'?

I just wanted to say that I am so jealous of you ladies who got to experience the 80s (I was born in December 84). It is my favorite era in terms of clothes, music and movies, and I would have loved to have experienced it. I wish you would post pictures! And talk about what bands you loved and stuff. I love to hear about it!

I can help you with part of that. Anything by Wham! or Prince were some of my favorites. I also like DeBarge, Rick Springfield, Guns N Roses, etc. I love 80's music! It was the best! Parachute pants were big then too. My brother loved them. His favorite was Vanilla Ice.

80s music is definitely the best! I live in central PA and we have some great 80s cover bands that play on the weekends around here and it is a blast! And we have something called 80's Prom every year hosted by one of our local radio stations and it is the best.

And parachute pants made a comeback for a minute with the teenage girls. That was unexpected lol

I was wondering about the math on this one too.

I also graduated HS in 90, and it is like wow hard to believe it's been 25, wait a minute, that's 26 years. :rotfl:

Nobody said anything to me about my 25th reunion, I guess I missed it. I don't recall seeing anything on Facebook about it, maybe they didn't have one, or I just wasn't invited. The fact that I didn't even realize how long it has been is pretty indicative of how much I cared about it.

In regards to the original stuff, yes I loved the 80's stuff. Your self-image was directly related to the size of your poofy bangs. :thumbsup2

If anyone is waxing nostalgic for the 80's and was a big pop culture nerd (like me), may I suggest the book "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. It's something of a sci-fi adventure I suppose but more importantly it is just one great big giant love letter to the 80's and pop culture. And bonus: Steven Spielberg is making it into a movie to premier next year.

I went the other direction - shaved most of my head - what was left was platinum blond.
Bright red lipstick. Great black leather jacket.
Punk baby!

Bon Jovi. I grew up in Jersey. Bon Jovi all day erry day. I was fifteen years old in 1987 and basically what happened was a guy came to your door, handed your parents a Slippery When Wet CD, a can of hairspray, and a black eyeliner, and said "Good luck, folks!"

(Note to the literal-minded: NOT REALLY.)

1988 prom theme: "Never Say Goodbye".

NICE. I've had that on my Kindle but haven't started it yet! I picked it up after I finished "I Want My MTV" (which was a lot of fun) and some folks on Goodreads recommended it for people who liked the MTV book.

:love:Loved the 80's! Oh yes, I had the big high hair and side wings. When flat, my bangs went down to my nose but after teasing and fluffing them out (which I can only describe as looking like a waterfall) it grazed the forehead only.

I loved my pegged jeans (wore all colors, acid washed, and pinstriped too), rocked my Guess sweatshirts, wore my Swatch watch with the guard , and put my Trapper Keeper safely in my Esprit book bag. Ha ha ha.

The one thing I hope never returns as a fashion statement is stirrup pants. Yes, I loved them back then but OMG looking back they are horribly unflattering. :scared:
