Happy Thanksgiving!

Sending this early for those of us whom get away early!

Food for thought. On N.S. Canada AM a segment aired on inviting new Immigrants to our Thanksgiving Dinners. A volunteer group matches a host family with an invited family. (Number of children ie)

One of the families interviewed explained they have traveled the world (Occupations) and are now settling in Canada.

The common element they experienced on their travels was that even the poorest of people would always wish to share their food. The meal together was cherished by both parties.

The other family interviewed were new to Canada and very excited to experience a Thanksgiving Dinner with their host family. To garner another understanding of their new home.

It brought back fond memories for me of our earlier Thanksgiving dinners.

I just emailed my brother and Dsil whom are visiting with their daughter & family out west in Campbell River B.C. I was teasing about the summer like weather we are enjoying in Ontario. He took the wind out of my sails though. It is beautiful there today as well. Joked about how the turkey in their oven is making the house too hot!

What is traditionally served?

I had our Thanksgiving dinner here last night with some friends. Tomorrow my family (sisters, brother, nieces, nephews ect. ect.) get together and then on Monday my daughter, her husband and kids, his family and my family get together at her house for dinner.
I have Turkey, sausage (wheat and gluten free kinds) and regular dressing, mashed potatoes, mashed turnips, gravy, corn and cranberry sauce. We also have different kinds of pickles.
It is usually the same at the other 2 dinners except tomorrow everyone brings desserts and my brother and sister in law and kids cook the main meal. Since it seems that I can't bake according to my family I think I will be bringing tim bits.
On Monday I will be bringing homemade pumpkin pies. My own family really likes my baking.
So Happy Thanksgiving to all.

We had a big Thanksgiving meal here last night. There was 15 people here. I was home alone cooking while everyone else was having fun at the pumpkin patch. (I secretly like to be alone in my kitchen ) I made a nacho dip and roasted squash seeds as appetizers. I made a couple turkey breasts for all those pesky meat eaters. I made stuffing, roast potatoes, apple cranberry sauce, peas, corn, gravy, little roast sweet potato squashes, salad. For dessert I made maple sandwich cookies and pumpkin cupcakes with maple icing. My mom brought brownies. Today we have leftovers, just enough for one more meal for our family, perfect.

I had it yesterday. Travelled to Elmira, ON to my aunt and uncle's place with a ton of cousins/aunt and uncles and a few on their other side. 24 of us yesterday. And my uncle, who is 83 and had a stroke a few years back, does the entire dinner himself every single year. He will not let anyone help - and he demands that no one brings a thing.

One, that's enough to be thankful for. 83! And two, this part of my family is very religious. And THIS is religion to me. The quiet love and grace.

Happy thanksgiving

What is traditionally served?

For most of us I think it is a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls, and whatever vegetables suit your fancy. For us it is always mashed turnips, peas, and steamed or glazed carrots.

For at least 10 years we shared all the major holiday meals with another 2 families, alternating who was hosting. When there were 12 of us, we always served glazed spiral ham and scalloped potatoes au gratin as well. As the children grew up and grew apart we stopped that tradition and this year it will just be my family of 4, and we are just doing the turkey dinner. For dessert I am making gingerbread with hot lemon sauce.

Christmas dinner is exactly the same, but I'll probably make the ham as well. There may be a mutiny if I don't.
