Egyptian Ferry Sinks

I heard this on the news earlier, it is such sad news, does anyone know why it sank ?

what a terrible shame :sad2: what with that and the turkey bird flu thing looks like it'll be another bad year for travel.

Terrible news but doesn't surprise me, my guess is the ship in question is an ex english channel ferry 36yrs old :rolleyes2 and it might even be an ex Townsend-Thoresen ferry. My view is once a ferry is over a certain age scrap it.

reports on the news this morning mentioned a fire on board, plus the sea was unusually choppy.
I expect it'll be a little while before we know for definate.
terrible shame

I suspect water on the car deck, i don't think there was any May-Day given.

Sources familiar with the ship say that it was modified in the 1980s, with two more passenger decks placed on the top of the vessel.

As a result, says David Osler from the London shipping paper Lloyds List, the ferry had an "unusually high profile", sitting much taller in the water than it was originally designed to do.
