Egyptian Ferry Sinks

An Egyptian ferry carrying more than 1,300 people has sunk in the Red Sea.

Fourteen bodies and 12 survivors have so far been pulled from the sea, Egyptian officials said.

Terrible news but doesn't surprise me, my guess is the ship in question is an ex english channel ferry 36yrs old and it might even be an ex Townsend-Thoresen ferry. My view is once a ferry is over a certain age scrap it.

reports on the news this morning mentioned a fire on board, plus the sea was unusually choppy.
I expect it'll be a little while before we know for definate.

I suspect water on the car deck, i don't think there was any May-Day given.

Sources familiar with the ship say that it was modified in the 1980s, with two more passenger decks placed on the top of the vessel.

As a result, says David Osler from the London shipping paper Lloyds List, the ferry had an "unusually high profile", sitting much taller in the water than it was originally designed to do.
