My left big toenail is hanging by a thread. I have no idea what I did to it, but last week I was taking my nail polish off, and I noticed my whole toenail was black. And now it is hanging by a thread, ready to fall off...THE WHOLE THING, not just the tip. I could just throw up its so gross. I don't remember hurting it, but my feet are in ice skates for hours on end, so maybe thats why.

Anyway, have any of you ever had this happen? Does it grow back? How long? Do I need to do anything with it, like wrap it until it grows back?

I LIVE in flip flops in summer...and I have 89 days until a Disney trip. Will I have pretty toes back by then?

When I go hiking I often bruise my toenails so that they fall off. Ususally the nail gets dark and falls off like a loose tooth. But my toe itself hasn't turned black. Sounds like you need to leave off the skates for awhile, or get bigger ones.

My son had one of his big toenails removed surgially because it kept getting ingrown.

Sound like you may have injured it and not known. It should grow back ok, but I would keep the polish off all of them for a bit to make sure it's not a fungal infection.

No the actual toe isn't bruised...I guess I did kind of make it sound that way...the whole toe-nail is bruised, not the whole toe. I've had the same skates for years, and this has never happened. Maybe I had too thick a pair of socks on one day. Skating season is done in two weeks, so looking forward to that!

DD lost a toenail after a soccer accident, and it has finally (slowly)grown back, all ok now, it just looked really gross for a while.

I lost the toenail off of my big toe some weeks after a day of skiing. I guess the two pair of socks got bunched up and pressed on the nail all day. It turned black and blue also. Once it fell off, it wasn't that bad, since there looked to be a layer of nail underneath anyway to protect it. I don't remember how long it took to grow back to normal, but I don't recall it being a big deal. But then, I've never had "pretty feet", so I most likely didn't bother trying to make it look better!

This has happened to me a couple times from running. I made sure I got a good fitting pair of running shoes recently. My other ones might have been too small. They didn't feel like it though.
It does grow back fine, but it takes a while.

I worked in a bakery and dropped a very large tray on my big toe once. It turned black and fell off too. I don't remember it being a big deal as it grew back either. Believe me, it looks better with the nail off than it did when it was black! ;)

My DH just banged his toe against a cabinet last month and half of his toe nail is black, but it didn't fall off. So it seems that the toe just gets bruised, or blood collects underneath the nail. And like any other bruise, it just takes time to heal.

Good luck! I'm sure that you will be wearing sandals by your trip! :)

i lost a toenail once--(i dropped a Pledge can on my foot while i was dusting)..It did grow back. I put neosporin and covered it with a bandaid for awhile--dunno if that helped though!

Call a podiatrist on Monday and have it looked at! Make sure there is NO infection!
I go all the time to my podiatrist for check-ups. :thumbsup2

My toenail got caught on my daughters highchair that she was hanging onto and I grabbed her and it flipped over. My toenail was instantly ripped off. Causing me pain I can't even begin to describe. It was months before it grew back and it grew back kind of with ridges in it. But this could of been because of the way it was injured. I don't wish this on anyone.

I have recent experience w/ this issue...I walked the 60 mile Breast cancer walk the 1st weekend in Oct. Lost BOTH big toenails. The podiatrist said to keep a thin layer of neosporin on for awhile in the beginning, to prevent infection. I think they felt tender for a couple of weeks, but then they felt fine. However, they just NOW are beginning to look normal - my nails are grown back completely; it does take awhile....good luck!

Thanks everyone!

For those of you that have had healthy toenails ripped off...all I can say is OUCH! That makes me cringe just thinking about it!

My toe doesn't look that bad actually, and I think the new nail was already starting to grow underneath.

I'm a distance runner and pretty much am always in the process of losing and growing toe nails. My DH calls me Black Toe Hobbit regularly. Anyway, the last time I lost my big toe nail was in May and by mid August it was pretty much back to normal. I wear flip flops and just paint what ever tiny little nub of nail I have. In 88 days, you should have a pretty good looking toe!!

My son stepped on my toe in October while we were in Disney. It hurt sooo bad. When we got home, I took off the polish, and the entire nail was black. It fell off in January, and it has grown out about midway as of today. It's warm here, and I was going nuts wanting to wear my sandals. I live in flip flops in the summer. So, last night, I broke down and painted it, along with my skin on the missing part. You can tell if you look closely at it, but it works enough for me to feel comfortable in sandals.

I lose my little toes' toenails a lot but that doesn't really hurt and they always grow back. I've only lost a portion of a big toenail once and that did hurt big time! I feel for you but it'll come back by summer.

I've had this happen..I let my big toenail grow a shade too long and snagged it on some furniture one day. The whole thing bent backwards (OWWIEEE!) and fell off. IIRC, it took around 2-3 mos to completely grow back.

Here's hoping yours grows back in time for your trip. :wizard:
