Eeeeeewwww! Did you ever lose a toenail? TMI alert!

My son stepped on my toe in October while we were in Disney. It hurt sooo bad. When we got home, I took off the polish, and the entire nail was black. It fell off in January, and it has grown out about midway as of today. It's warm here, and I was going nuts wanting to wear my sandals. I live in flip flops in the summer. So, last night, I broke down and painted it, along with my skin on the missing part. You can tell if you look closely at it, but it works enough for me to feel comfortable in sandals.

You can do that, that is perfectly FINE! :goodvibes I had to have BOTH my big toenails surgically removed as I was suffering horribly with ingrown toenails. This was 15 years ago. Now podiatrists just basically STRIP the sides of the nails LEAVING the nail in place....in any event my nails are GONE! And I have my pedicurist PAINT them all the time. ESP if there is any event I am going to and I am wearing dress sandals or dress shoes that will expose my toe nails. I will say the nailpolish comes off quicker on these toes as there is NO nail to adhere the paint. But for the time being it does look nice and unnoticeable to anyone who happens to glance down at my toes. The best part of all is I never suffer anymore with those ingrown toe nails..ouch!!!

I've lost them due to running--new ones do grow in...it will take a while.

I lose them on the toe next to my big toe. No idea why--I go all season...and then on race day---that's what triggers the loss.

ETA: As far as how long--I lost my toe nails (or they were lifted up off the nail bed anyway) The 2nd week of January. It is now almost mid-march and the nail bed is one third filled with new nail (2 months later).

I've lost fingernails before. never toenails. Maybe the cuticle was damaged? That is what happened in all cases of me losing any nails. It'll hurt, but it needs to come off. another one will grow (probably already is) growing in place of it.

No, I take very good care of my toenails..would you like to see them? :teeth:

in high school i played field hockey for about 2 months. apparently getting water blisters under your toenails is very common with cleats on. that happened to me and i lost my toenail, it looks totally normal now though and you'd never realize i ever lost it. thank god. feet can really be gross.

I lost a big toenail by a bowling ball accident when I was 8 ish. It hurt like crazy when the nail should be until it grew back. It took a long time but I was young so it could have just seemed like it. I have a ridge in mine down the center. Something to do with the trama of it.

My Mom does to, she lost hers because the doctor had to cut hers off. Her foot went under the door and bent weird.

This made me gag. Yuck!

I lost a toenail before. It didnt hurt, wasn't black, and there was no known trauma either. Just one day it looked crooked, so I touched it, and it fell off. Scared the crud out of me. It grew back just fine over time though.

A couple of years ago I dropped (and broke) a jar of spaghetti on my big toe. It hurt like a big dog and a few weeks later the nail fell off. It took almost 6 months before it grew back completely. I remember because I went on my cruise with a quarter of a toenail.

This is educational. I never realized toenail loss was a consequence of jogging. One more reason to stay on the couch and drink beer.

A small safe fell on my big toe once and the nail came off. It grew back and you wouldn't know it ever even happened. Not true, however, for the smashed fingernail loss. I've smashed three fingers (at two different times) and one fingernail stayed funky.

When I was about 8 my family was in WDW and my dad opened a really heavy door at one of the resorts (Contemporary, maybe?) and he didn't realize that my foot was right in front of it. It ripped half my big toenail off, and it was a bloody mess and hurt very badly.

I remember crying a lot, but going to a nearby first aid room and having people do all kinds of silly things to make me feel better made the experience not so bad. It took a while but the nail grew back perfectly.

mantysk8coach, is the picture in your signature The Nelsons, as in Matthew and Gunnar? Wow, I used to love them in high school when they had long hair; what cuties! They sure look different now! I didn't know they were still doing stuff. **Can't live without your... Love!** (Don't worry, I'm just remembering some of their lyrics, that's all ;) )

Yes it is! They are still performing (they are actually at Epcot's Flower Power concerts some time in April). I saw them in January at a casino in Green Bay, WI. They play a lot of their dads old music, in addition to both new and old stuff of their own. I have been a fan since their long hair days though!
