ECV experience

I have been renting my scooter from Walker but the last couple of times the scooter I got wasn't in the best condition. The seat was wobbly and torn and the it just didn't seem to operate at it's best. I am considering this trip using Scooerama because their scooters look newer and easier to use. Has anyone used both companies and would recommend one over the other?

I don't know much about Scootarama as a company and I'm sure they would be an excellent choice if you choose to rent from them. The Revo is a very good machine and easy to take apart for transport in the trunk of your car. We were just there in August and I had also rented from Walker. The scooter I received had a little problem when you went in reverse. When you let off the lever it still went. Not just rolling back - but almost like you were still pushing the lever. And really, not very far - but when you are trying to get on and off buses and boats it was disconcerting. I called them the first night, left a message on the after hours answering machine, they called me first thing the next morning (7) and brought one right over to swap with me. This one worked fine. They both looked a little beat up, some scuffs and stuff, but I didn't expect a pristine new one, and am glad I didn't receive one. After over a week of loading on and off buses and fighting crowds on busy streets I'm sure I added a scuff or two myself.

Interesting... I also had been renting from Walker but last time I got a scooter from them I had real problems with it, also... VERY poor excelleration even when fully charged... backing up would stop and start rather than run smoothly... I probably should have asked for a replacement but frankly decided to just deal with it since I didn't want the hassle... though, frankly it sounds like this one isn't the only dog in their fleet

Rented from Buena Vista scooters a couple of weeks ago for the same price and while it was definitely scuffed, nicked and slightly tatty, it ran like a charm , so I was very pleased.

agreeing though that the rentals are generally not brand spanking new and have some scuffs on them.

I've rented from Randy's in the past and have had a great experience with them. I'm also looking at holiday-scooters.com which seems to be connected with Randy's. Looks like they have new equipment too.

The last few times we rented from Walker we got kind of nasty ECV's. Each time they had trouble, and the replacements were much better.

Randy's has always served us well, also.

I've only rented from Walker's twice - the first time no problems at all, the second time was just the minor problem I listed earlier and it was taken care of right away. I have placed an order with them for our Dec trip. I probably could have gotten used to the reverse issue on my original ECV, it really wasn;t major, but since we rely completely on buses for getting around and since I am so uncomfortable loading the ECV anyway, I figured I better get something a little bit better. The thing that led me to them over Randy's when I was first renting one was the fact that they would drop it off and it would be there waiting for us when we arrived. It was my understanding that with Randy's they would deliver it to you personally - which meant I had to know where I would be ahead of time, or wait for them to get where I was. I have an impatient crowd with me and didn't think that would be a viable option for us.

I was told that "all of our new scooters, now have headlights". Anyway, the impression I got was that they had new ones. Someone might call and ask. I guess we've been lucky, but we've never had a problem with any of Walkers ECVs. Oh, yes, they are also now encouraging you strongly to buy their insurance. I think it was like $20.00 more. Could that be because they have new ECVs? We've never even been asked to buy insurance from them before.

The old scooters have a headlight, too, so that alone would not indicate it is new. Make sure you don't accidently leave it on because it will drain the battery... learned that the hard way

Oh no, I don't want to read these.... it took me forever to decide to rent off site ( worried about getting on buses) and then another forever, lol to decide which company to go with, and I am going with Walkers. Oh well, hope for the best and theres always next year for another company.

Just a minor observation.

None of the equipment rental companies are perfect.

There will always be the occasional ECV where the battery goes bad or there will be another problem.

For a company to be listed in the FAQ it is one that has had a lot of favorable comments by people in this forum. Yes, there will always be an occasional unfavorable comment but the comment has to be weighed.

For example, I bought a used ECV from one of the companies listed when I moved down here and I got a good four years of use from the ECV afterwards before I bought a new one.

ECVs are not cheap. The normal "standard" ECV is well over $2,000 and the transportables tend to be in the $1,500 price range. There really is not much of a secondary market in ECVs, as there is in cars, so the companies will tend to repair and maintain their equipment reather than always buying new ones.

So don't worry if you see occasional complaints about one of the companies, especially ones that say the ECVs had a lot of scrapes, etc., as a general rule if it is listed here is has and it maintains a good reputation.

I actually just got an email from Walker advertising a 2009 super scooter Savings Promotion... standard scooter for $25/day but you have to call to make the reservation...

I'll be going again in October and this is tempting me to give them another shot...

I have rented from scootarama 4 times over the past 4 years and I will be renting from them again this year. I've never had a problem with the scooters I rented. They were always delievered on time and in great shape.

First, they have Pride go go scooters that are heavy duty for very reasonable rates. The go go scooters are very portable and very light in weight compared to most. The scooter we are getting is rated for 300 pounds and a 13 mile battery capacity. He has weekly rates that are great and a daily rate thereafter. I was actually going to buy this scooter for the trip. When I saw I could rent it instead I was a happy camper. His place was the only one I could find this model. Also, they are a 4 wheel scooter and those are very hard to come by in Orlando. My hubby prefers the 4 wheel models.

I'll report back sometime in January about my experience. I tried to get opinions here about Apple, but I think they are too new to get much input yet.

are different, now. They use a 17 not 12 battery; this gives it more capacity. Also, the newer models are designed to take more weight. They cost about $400 to $500 more than the lower end models which are rated for 8 to 10 on mileage.

I've rented from Randy's, Walker, and Scooterama. While they're all great, Scooterama did something the other companies wouldn't or couldn't - on my request, they removed the arms before dropping off the scooter. I don't need the support, I don't use the armrests - and I tend to leave them flipped up, which means they sometimes get caught on doorways. This way, no risk of damage.

But Randy's has green scooters - the actual color green - and so, this is my preferred company
