Hi LPT, We could not find a better deal for our party of 5 than to rent a Minivan to go from Miami to WDW. Hertz didn't have any vans left to reserve so I went with Dollar who also has a shuttle bus from the Miami port to the rental office.

I am also reading The Path Between the Seas, about 60% through it and really hope to finish by November!! The story of the canal really is about all the people and the various roles they played. Never expected so much back room schmoozing and complex politicking behind the actual build. Happy Reading!

We may need to go that route too....I've got a Dollar Minivan on reserve just in case.

I have used magnetic paper and printed on my home printer and it has worked well for me. I also printed some on photo paper and put magnetic tape pieces on the back. And I've tried card stock with magnetic tape on the back. They all worked well.

Thanks -- now I'm in the know.

I need to stop working on the FE and start reading again, I am still at 33%. I want to finish it before the cruise!

If it makes you feel any better I'm at 3% -- but I'll try to catch up to you within the next few days, so the race is on. :rotfl2:

We decided to add a few days on at the end of the cruise to go up to WDW. Just couldn't resist!

We've been searching around and are astounded by the cost of for a car rental out of Miami. Cheap out of MCO, but brutal out of Miami.

What are others doing? I see some shuttle options (that are far more affordable but crazily inconvenient.)

What advice to you have for me oh wise and all knowing DISers??

Dollar rental car for a minivan was $150 online going from Miami to WDW one day rental using my AAA discount code.

GOOD Morning, Happy Cruisers!

So after several days of lurking this thread I am posting... We booked this cruise in May while on the Wonder, it will be me (Holly) and BF Jonathan. By the time we cruise it will be my fourth and his sixth with DCL!

We may want to do the fish extenders (but will check with J) and I would love to do the ruins tour. :)

Welcome Aboard Holula!

We will use a Christmas stocking for our FE. I've been compiling my FE gifts and making sure they are all small and light. But when you make a pile of stuff for 65 cabins, it really starts to pile up! I am thinking of putting them all in a box and shipping them there.

Thanks again for all the coordinators of our special events. You guys are GREAT!! :lovestruc

Liz

If you're in a hotel the night before, I've found that shipping them there works well.

. . .but can someone tell me once you have the graphics how do you get them onto magnets. Do you go to the photo printer (e.g., Walgreens or Costco) and have them do it or do you buy special stuff to print and make them yourself? And is there any difference between traditional shaped magnets and what you would need to do if you were going to do the Mickey ears you can put on your door above the number? I'm envisioning an exacto knife or something.

Your local print shop may not want to do anything with a disney image on it.

I can only tell you what I do. After all my images are downloaded, Depending on size, I open a powerpoint document and "Insert Picture" from a file. Depending on size, I can get 1 or a whole lot of images on a page, and just keep adding pages until I have them all on. SAVE IT.

You can buy magnet backed paper in Walmart, Staples, office max etc. which can be printed on OR you can print on regular photo paper and adhere old advertising magnets to the back.

SOME of the doors now have such a thick coating on them that the thin magnet paper doesn't cling very well. So I've started using pieces of "air vent return cover", instead of magnet paper. You find this item in Lowes or home depot in the HVAC aisle - it comes 3 long sheets to a pack for about 5$ US.

Magnet paper can easily be cut with scissors or an exacto knife.

Cars will be expensive due to the holiday - but I recommend - even after you have a reservation, keep shopping them right up until you leave using discount codes from mousesavers.

Happy Day, all!

For those familiar with our ports, any recommendations as to where to buy vanilla? I plan to buy some, know to avoid coumadin, but wonder where to get it.

Clever -- so if you go the magentic air vent return cover what do you print on (regular paper, photo paper) and what type of adhesive do you adhere with?

The minivan is still $150 at Dollar even w/o AAA discount ($110 base price and then $40 in various fees). I'll definitely let the rest know if I find something better.

I got a one day Alamo rental for $111 through Costco. We pick up their shuttle at the port, then get the car at the Miami airport. We'll leave the car at the Dolphin. I think it's a pretty good deal - the tolls are included.

I :lovestruc my hubby! For many reasons really, but the latest is this. Instead of flying into LA Sat and cruising our Sun, he wants to fly out Fri and spend Sat at Disneyland!:cool1: So I spent some time readjusting plans and we are all set! Staying at same hotel, just added a night. Same Hertz rental, just added a night and switched flights on SW. We aren't telling DD until the last minute. Can I keep that kind of secret? :confused3
On a sadder note, DS #1 thinks we 'suck' because he has always wanted to go to DL during Christmastime to see the Haunted Mansion/Nightmare before Christmas there. We have promised to take him in May after his college graduation although it won't be the Nightmare version. Sorry Mattie!

Good morning everyone! Kids are off at school and today I am going to try to plow through some FE gifts...I figure if I do a few everyday, I'll be good to go by the time our cruise comes around. On Tuesday I got my tease for the cruise by having lunch on the Wonder while it was docked in San Francisco. We also went on a tour, but I think I could have led the tour as well! It made me so want to get on our cruise right now! The lunch was great and we had a great server...Ismet from Turkey. He kept wanting to bring more dishes out for us! After the tour, we headed over to the Walt Disney Museum only to find out that it is closed on Tuesday's! We were so disappointed. I will have to go another day. Hope everyone enjoys their day.

That's basically what we are doing, but I had hoped to keep the car the entire time. We'll switch to a different (far cheaper) rental after we arrive. Just an extra step and inconvenience I had hoped to avoid. Another reason to love Orlando more, I guess!

Now he's a keeper but I am guessing you already knew that! Welcome to the DLR on Saturday crew.

Do we have a list of who is doing DLR on Saturday? That would be kinda fun to know and see who we might run into.

So I got a txt from my DH this morning that said "Don't be mad and don't flip out but check te update to Dec 7th and 8th" Looks like DH is going to India for work for a week, there are two possible weeks he maybe going and the second option has him getting home on Saturday 12/8 in the afternoon into Newark, NJ. Def isn't making our 12/7 flight out of PHL on Friday morning. My fingers are crossed that they will send him the first week (which happens to be the week of my 30th birthday) . I much rather him miss my birthday than miss the cruise and DL. It just makes me so nervous if there is any issues with his India flight and a cross country flight that it is cutting it too close! Plus I don't want to have to drive the rental with the kids all over LA and I know my sister won't drive . Hopefully it will work out, as DH said "at least they aren't sending me the following week!

After all that, what better place to end up in than DL and/or a DCL 2 week cruise. :cool1:

Not sure what he does or who he works for, but is there any possibility that his employer would simply route him back to LA instead of Newark? Would be harder on you to have to get everything to LA, but meeting him there would save the time of the extra flights he'd have to go through. He'd still miss DL, but would make the cruise.

For those familiar with our ports, any recommendations as to where to buy vanilla? I plan to buy some, know to avoid coumadin, but wonder where to get it.

I buy Azteca brand - it comes clear and regular. Will probably buy it in a store near the dock in Cabo, where I bought it last year.

Clever -- so if you go the magentic air vent return cover what do you print on (regular paper, photo paper) and what type of adhesive do you adhere with?

I haven't tried printing on it, but it does have a white side. You will just need to set your program to print a custom size because the vent cover is longer and narrower than regular paper.

IF I'm going to adhere magnets to the back of something - like my wreath, I cut the rough shape I need and use double stick tape to adhere the white side to my item.

IF what I want to back is an 81/2 x 11 sheet of paper then I cut that much and put it in a sheet protector and slide my paper in in front of it. Then it can be reused for other designs, just by swapping out the design page.

Did you folks who are at DL the night before think of having a pre-meet meet? We had one the night before the Hawaii in the lobby of the Grand Californian.

That's what I would recommend. Have him fly right into LAX. It can likely be done - especially this far in advance - without any additional cost. Ship his cruise stuff to the hotel, along with a preaddressed label to ship his work clothes home.

When I made my magnets I just took cheap ones, the ones you get free everywhere, and then I printed photos in color on regular paper and glued them on. I think they looked fine on our door. They are actually still on our fridge 2 years later, the one in the garage, they look a little worn now though so need to do some more.
I didn't want anyone taking them off my door. Just good enough, but not good enough to steal;)

Hello everyone!

The following link will take you to an order form for the PC Certificates:

Panama Canal Certificates Order Form

Once you submit your form, I will send you a PayPal invoice. The deadline to order is October 9th.

I will give the certificates in bulk to Guest Services so they can arrange for the Captain to sign them at his leisure (scheduled Captain is Thord Haugen, but that can change).

I am working with DCL on a time/place to distribute the signed certificates, either sea Day 11 (12/19) or Day 12 (12/20) and most likely late morning or early afternoon. Distribution meet & greet to be announced.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask :).

Liz

I don't have a paypal account. Do we need one to pay for the certificate? I'm not sure I want to set one up just to pay for a certificate. I totally understand, tho', that you need to be paid and don't expect you to take a chance of being stuck with people not paying. Guess I never thought much about how it might work. Would it be simpler if I just not get one?
