Ebay : so why would anyone sell there?

so tell me, .. if i sell an item for 10.00, i have to give bay a dollar and paypal another dollar and pay to ship? that'd be less than $5.00??

ouch.

Somewhat correct. eBay would take close to $1.00 if you choose to sell it fixed-price. If you choose to sell it auction-style their fees are slightly lower. Paypal takes something like 30 cents + 3% so Paypal would take about 60 cents. Then it is up to you on shipping. If you offered free shipping, then yes that would be taken out as well. If the buyer paid for shipping, then that wouldn't be out of your pocket.

As I have said before, selling on eBay is not for everyone. It has changed over the years and many sellers like myself have adapted to those changes and still definitely come out way ahead. In my opinion, it is now geared less toward those sellers that would use it as a way to clean out their closets and more toward those that want to treat it as a part-time for some supplemental income.

ETA: the other thing to remember is that eBay is a business. They are not offering their site out of the goodness of their heart...they are in business to make a profit just like anyone else.

Well, eBay allows me to make thousands of dollars a year that I would not be able to make otherwise, so for that I really cannot complain. And I have an eBay store (that I pay $15.95 per month for) that brings my fees down to about 5% instead of 9% on my auction-style listings...I more than make my $15.95 back with the discount on my fees. I also get 20% of my final value fees back each month for being a top-rated seller. So there are ways to bring the costs down. But again, like with anything, it works for some and not for others. It is apparent that you do not feel that it is for you and that is perfectly fine. However, it is not all bad and it definitely does work for many people very well.

I have some auction-style listings and some fixed-price listings. I don't have any Disney designer bags though.

I usually figure the ebay + paypal fees to be between 13%-17% of the total paid depending on whether it's auction or Buy it now. I work that into my price when I list. So, for example, I want to make $20 on an item. I do the math: $20/85% (figuring 15% in fees, and I would get 85%)=$23.53. I would price my item at $24ish. I make $20, ebay/paypal make $4.
