Ebay shipping charge question?

I purchased an item from a seller tonight who has only 6 feedbacks. (All positive) The problem is they have a shipping calculator and when I entered my zip the charge came out as $4.52. In the past when I have bought or sold that calculator figured in any handling charges. Actually there is a link at the bottom of the calculator that says the extra shipping charges are calculated into this. When I went to pay via Paypal the seller tacked an additional handling fee of $2 to my shipping bringing my new shipping total to $6.52 on my books. (media mail) I went back and noticed that in "shipping instructions" the seller noted that an additional $1 charge would be added to media mail for handling. I hate to split hairs but I assumed that showed up in her calculator costs since when you click on the calculator it says shipping and handling. I contacted the seller and asked them to explain the charge or please adjust it. Any additional advise or anyone with more knowledge about this? Thanks!

Technically, they should have added the handling fee to the ebay shipping calculator, but since they are a newbie they probably didn't realize they can do that. If it is mentioned in the terms of the auction, I would just pay it. :flower:

With $6.52 of media mail, you could ship 15 pounds of books! I would probably pay it, but send them an email letting them know that their rates are outrageous. Depending on their response, I would possibly leave a neutral feedback stating their shipping costs are high & the added amount not in the calculation.

Well, the problem is, they did mention adding an additional $1 for handling in the description and when I got to "check out" there was an additional $2. To those who think I should just pay it and let it go--I probably will--but I am already paying close to retail for my books and when it comes to something this inexpensive-- that extra dollar or two makes you wonder why you are buying something used instead of new...

A lot of sellers get tripped up by the shipping calculater (I did too). If the item description specifically mentions an extra handling charge, you need to pay that even if that is not included in the shipping calculator's shipping only number.

If the seller simply says that "the shipping calculator goofed" or if the invoice names a charge not seen before, then you have an out regarding completing the transaction and buying the item.

It sounds like they might be trying to get a bit more for their auction. Being that it's only a $1, i'd pay it but still question it. You are helping them to learn and maybe this won't happen again to the next person.

Just a hint for the future, if you're looking for books I think Amazon.com is better than eBay. They have set shipping charges (the seller can't change them) and the used books are really cheap since there's a lot of inventory on there.
