I have purchased about 10 textbooks in the last few weeks from eBay. I was very careful to check ISBN's and descriptions Of the books.

One of the books we ordered was listed as trade cloth (hardback) with the same ISBN numbers that we needed. The listing photo was a stock photo but exactly matched the book.

The actual book we received was paperback and had different ISBN. Its cover was close, but not the same as the stock photo on the listing. Its publishing date was different than the book we needed.

The seller states that he doesn't accept returns so I submitted a report to the eBay resolution center that the item was not as described. I haven't heard from the seller yet.

My son cannot use that book for the class (checked with the teacher), so I would like to return it. How does that process work? Does the seller pay the return postage? This was not a case of changing my mind, it was a case of the seller completely misrepresenting the item. I'm not sure how to proceed when (and if) the seller contacts me. I really don't want to have to pay for return postage.

I feel for you....I've been there. For my experience, the seller dropped off the face of the planet as soon as I told him he sent an older book (hopefully yours had a good rating and sold a lot of items on ebay, they will be easier to track down). Ebay said they tried to contact the seller to get the issue resolved but could not get a response. Ebay would not refund my money, paypal did the same. I was out over $100 for one book. I quickly posted the book with the correct ISBN on ebay and sold the item, but got significantly less than what I spent (maybe $20). What really PO'd me was the actual version I needed was nearly identical to the old version with the exception of a couple of pictures and a few text edits. College textbooks are a scam. After that incident I began to stick to Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I've always had great experiences with both. This incident occurred 8 years ago, and I can only hope for your sake Ebay has realized that this is no way to do business. Good luck on getting your refund.

Ebay will find in your favor, and you'll be required to return the book. Usually, postage will be at your own expense. Sometimes eBay will cover the postage, but that seems to be random.

Did eBay have a buyers protection plan back then?

I had always throught of eBay as only a place to buy small antiques or one-of-a-kinds that just could not be readily found elsewhere.

Otherwise better to deal with reputable stores that take credit cards, where charges can be disputed if there is a problem with the merchandise.
