...to sell on its website???

I just got a redirect from ebay, when logging on, that it's time for me to pay my $2.99 monthly fee in order to prevent disruption of my ability to sell things on ebay. As if they don't make enough on fees and other charges now. :sad2:

Guess that ends my occassional selling things on ebay. Actually it ticks me off enough to where it may end my buying things on ebay.

What rock have I been under? I never knew this was even coming. Has anyone else seen this?

This sounds fishy.

Do not click on the blue words in the email message.
Do not click on the blue words in any email message*.
Do not reply to the email message.
Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200.

This is a fraud.

Suggest that before you really hand type www.ebay.com in the address or URL strip up top, you should log off the internet and log back on or better yet reboot the computer. Then go to My Ebay and see if there are any messages there.

If you get funny messages when really going to the web site (eBay, TheDIS, Amazon.com, etc.), there is a virus in your computer. Try doing a Tools,Internet Options (if you are using Internet Explorer) and then clear cookies. Then reboot the computer. Should you still see funny messages you ought to have a geek come in and service the computer including removing undesirable things from the startup directory and the run category in the registry.

*The only exception I can think of is when you pro-actively register for a web site such as eBay or TheDIS or Amazon.com, they tell you to complete your registration by waiting for an email and replying to it. Then click the blue words in that specific email as directed.

It's a scam. If you log into your account you won't see that email in your ebay account. Be sure to type it in and not go thru the link in that email.

They almost got me w/a your CC has expired. My CC had just expired but I didn't see why I had to have a CC on file if I wasn't buying anything so I ignored it. A few weeks later I finally logged in and there were no emails in my account.

There is not a monthly fee to sell on eBay. When you sell items you pay a listing fee and a final value fee if the item sells. There are other fees for using other ebay services like selling manager but no monthly fee just to be able to sell. It sounds like you somehow got a link from a scammer...

This was NOT an email. This was a redirect when I logged in. I'm not about to give ebay or anyone else credit card information to be able to sell things on ebay.

I did check my messages, and there's nothing from them regarding a change in terms or any fees.

If the phishers have figured out how to redirect off of ebay's website, this does not bode well for anyone who visits that site.

Be careful out there!

Funny messages or redirects that occur and ask for personal information when you really try to log onto a web site are referred to as "pharming". (Term ambiguous with certain drug activities.)

Usually it is time to call the geek. Try (Best Buy's?) Geek Squad.

eBay under Hacker Attacks

Hijack of connections
By: Bogdan Popa, Security and Search Engines Editor

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

eBay is the well known online auction and shopping website that allows users to bid and buy products online using a simple and secure web interface. Because it works with financial information, it's very important to provide a safe way to make transactions and
acquire new stuff. This is the main reason that makes hackers continuously attack the page, trying to obtain financial details or bank accounts. Today, a new hack attack was reported by Virus Bulletin, a security company that identified numerous attempts for hijacking connections to the eBay motors, the car selling website.

"eBay security has been the subject of much scrutiny recently after a hacker acquired access to an administrator account and posted several messages to forums at the site, showing off his elevated access. eBay Motors has also been criticized for its high levels of fraud, particularly since changes in bidder privacy measures were introduced earlier this year, in an effort to minimize phishing. It is not yet known how the attack is intended to operate, as the sites serving data to infected machines have yet to issue activation codes for specific auctions to redirect to," Virus Bulletin reported.

The exploitation works quite simple but it requires a user action to be started. That's why all the eBay clients that are looking to avoid a hacking attack must also avoid clicking on untrusted files. So, the procedure is based on a Trojan that must be installed on the remote computer, allowing the attacker to connect using a proxy server. Then, the malicious file will connect to some predefined locations and collect certain eBay information.

Some time ago, eBay decided to block the auction of virtual goods because more and more users started to buy and sell Word Of Warcraft items, making eBay a real virtual market for games' products.

This morning I have an email stating the same thing about fees. I wanted to forward it to eBay, but guess what? This (apparent) virus will not let me into the screen with the forwarding address for spam. Can anyone remember what that email address is? TIA!

spoof@ebay.com

You really need to run some virus software! I can't remember the names of the free ones my DH uses at home. AdAware and something else.

Thanks for the email address. I thought that's what it was, but wasn't sure.

I have AdAware and Avira, and both are fully operational. You'd think one or the other or both would have caught this, wouldn't you?

Spyware Doctor is also well worth the money. I had cr@p on my computer that it found and it made a big difference.

dude, you have been phished! :scared1: :scared1:

Hope you didn't pay the fee. :(

I've been selling on ebay for 6 years I just listed more items a week ago, they just are ending today, I've never ran across that...I smell a scam!

This ONLY montly fee that you are charged for selling on E-bay is if you own an E-bay store... and that would be sweet if it was only $2.99!!!!!
