eating with your child

Sorry if I offended you-we seemed to have been posting at the same time and I was unaware of your most recent post.

Have most people on the DIS only lived in one place their entire lives?:confused3

At DS' first school (in AZ) we didn't eat with the kids. They had to eat at their desks (K and 1st grade) and there was no room for us. We could volunteer in the classroom, but that was about it.

When we moved to Belgium, we couldn't eat with the kids. Hell, at the Belgian Pre-school we weren't even allowed to go on the field trips! Some DISers would have crapped themselves.

Now that we've moved to this hole, we're allowed. We have to sign in and we can bring them lunch. The only time I've gone is when they've invited me for Thanksgiving.

Way back when I was in elementary school (the mid-80's), parents came to my school have lunch with kids.

Mine didn't (they worked full time), but a select few Moms definitely came around and even brought McDonalds (I was SO jealous of the McDonalds part).

I still remember which parents came - although I can't remember how often they did it.

Funny enough, the kids whose Moms came in were some of the biggest troublemakers in the school - I always wondered if they were coming in for fun or to "monitor."

I sometimes feel that way, too!

As a person who has moved from North to South I felt like My Favorite Martian when I got here:confused:. People do things differently based on the way things are DONE. At first I thought it was crazy and after awhile you get used to it and do it their way.. :confused3

Norm is what is normal in your world, I guess.

Where do you live now??? :lmao:

I have gone in for lunch with the kids a few times over the years. My boys always thought is was a huge treat when I would come in for lunch. All of their little friends loved it as well. I don't get a chance to do it often, maybe two or three times a year.

BTW, we are currently in our fourth set of schools in the four different states and parents eating lunch with their kiddos was common in each one.

Is this really the norm? Never heard of going to eat with you child at lunch. And the only time I took them out for lunch would be if they have an appointment then. And that is very rare. All appointments are made after school.

My mom never did when we were little either. :confused3 This was time to socialize with the kids at school. Only time I ate lunch with them is if I was on a field trip with them.

Our kids only get about 20 mins. too and eat inside the class. Then they go outside.
Ditto, on all counts. Never heard of such a thing. :confused3 And personally, I prefer it this way, so it works for me.

.

To answer that I was born in TX because my Dad was in the army. We moved back to small town MI (where my parents were from) before I was 1 year old. I lived here until I was 18. Went away to college 45 minutes from home. I lived at home 1 of the 4 years. Then I moved to Detroit area for 3 years. Then back here to the same town where I grew up. My kids go to the same school I did. They have some of the same teachers I had.

So basically I have lived here most of my life. It would be interesting to see how many other people stay in the same town they grew up in.
