Hi All- We are taking a little 3 day trip out to DL this next week and we've managed to get everything to be pretty cheap.:cool1: The only place I can never seem to save is on food. Any ideas? I am traveling with my Mom, six year old dd and my 9 mos. old ds. Thanks, any thoughts are appreciated!

Just don't eat in the park. Eat breakfast in your room or whatever breakfast the hotel provides if any. Either bring a sack lunch into the park with you, or go back to your hotel for rest and sandwiches, (if close enough to do so) either eat a modest dinner in the park ( we like Whitewater Snacks in Grand CA) or go back out to Mc Donalds or something. Bring in your own sodas finger food for the kids. Basically don't buy over priced food in the park. We always pop our own popcorn in the room and take along in either an old bucket or zip lock. Bottled water with a flavor stick, PB&J's Pepsi crackers or whatevers. Never had a problem

That is the hardest part of the trip?? Starve till you get home, just eat lunch in the park, try to eat cheap, and miss the little treats that make memories.

Is this supposed to be helpful? Tell her to starve? Oy :confused3

Are you staying in a hotel with fridge and/or microwave? You can bring snacks to the parks with you and drinks - bottled water, juice, etc. to save a lot on that. The meals in the parks themselves are quite large and you can really share (I do with my DS12 who is a big eater and there is more than enough).

I think of the food is fine, but it's definitely not ALL the "treats that make memories". My favorite is seeing my son's face while he was riding on the teacups - pure childhood :lovestruc

We are staying at the Hyatt Garden Grove. I checked the website and it doesn't list microwaves or refrigerators. Does anyone know how close it is to any shopping? We are taking the Super Shuttle so I won't have a car. Rental cars were crazy expensive for some reason. :confused3 I really appreciate the help!

There's a Target within easy walking distance across Harbor Blvd from the Hyatt. You can get pretty much everything you need there. You can also ask for a mini-fridge. I would call the hotel and see what they can offer you.

It's a Hyatt. They can do anything. (I used to be a business traveller - Hyatts took care of us very well!)

Just because you're on a budget, there's no reason to starve!

You can save alot of $$$ by bringing your own water/juice/iced tea/non carbonated drinks in a cooler, and storing it in a locker near the picnic area. If you've got a freezer in your hotel room, you can stick the bottles in the night before and put them in the cooler in the morning when you head out to the Park. That way, you'll have a cold drink whenever you want one during the day, plus you can use them instead of ice if you want to store snacks or a picnic lunch in the cooler as well. It's a bit more trouble to walk back to the locker to get more drinks, but at $2-$4 (usual Park prices) for drinks, the savings add up!

Have fun on your trip!

I agree with packing the drinks and bringing them in. That saves us bunches of money. Also, we do bring snacky type stuff and have even been known to pack a couple of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to stave off hunger pains. We try to order kids meals (even for the adults) if we aren't too hungry and stay with the counter service places rather than sit down restaurants. By saving here and there we can usually afford to splurge on a sit down meal at some point during the trip.

How do I find Whitewater Snacks? I have heard so many good things about them but have no idea where to find them. :confused3

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

It's in the Grand Ca by the Pool. It's quiet the servings are pretty big and FREE DRINK REFILLS. Yay. I like the french dip sandwich. It could easily be shared by 2.

Pacific Wharf soup and sandwiches are amazing. If you have two adults and two small kids with you, you could easily order one sandwich and one bowl of soup to split amongst everyone. Also, ask for the soup to be placed in a regular bowl and get the bread on the side (makes for great snacking all day long).

Visit the bread factory and the tortilla factory for a quick & free snack! We visit Misssion Tortillas at least once a day.

The chicken fusili pasta at Red Rocket's is also large enough to share. We add in an order of foccaccia bread (can you tell yet that I am a carbs addict?). They also give free refills on soda there.

Another great snack and share idea is Bengal BBQ. Order a bunch of skewers and try a little bit of everything. I particularly like the sweet beef (banyan?) skewer and the asparagus & bacon skewer. However, depending on how adventurous your kids are, they may like the chicken best.

Even though you are on a budget (and who isn't these days!), take the opportunity to experience the truly Disney offerings around the park. Visit the candy counter on Main Street or in Pooh corner and get a little something to share. My all time favorite are Tigger Tails, but they are expensive compared to buying a candy apple to split between several people.

And, while I try not to buy soda and water in the parks, I do splurge for a cherry coke from Refreshment Corner, and I am addicted to the frozen apple juice and lemonade slushes (add cherry to those too) sold numerous places around the park.

Anyway, have fun and enjoy your trip!:yay:

Have you looked at allears.net? They list the prices for the different places. Some places like Rancho del Zacholo have meals that are easily enough food. They have a 1/2 chicken or 4 enchiladas both with beans and rice or veggies for $13/ They have coled water that you can put in your water bottle. Bring those crystal ight or kool aid singles if you want a soft drink. Red Rosckets has a large portion of chicken pesto pasta that comes with bread stick/ salad.
We bring in frozen water bottles. We grab a muffin that we either brought (we fly) or something from the hotel cont breakfast to munch on in line for rope drop. Granola bars, fruit roll ups and goldfish for snacking between meals to keep our energy up. Then we aren't just starving at meal time. We usually will get a splitable adult meal and one kids meal for the 3 of us and share everything. Of course we will have to leave budget room for Dole Whips, BB and Character meals but by splitting other meals and bringing in snacks/ drinks we have the $ available to do these things

The great thing about bring snacks and sandwiches with you (not only do you save lots of money) is that you have the food when the kids get hungry. No melt downs. With 5 kids everyone gets hungry at different times and can eat when they want to. Waiting in line for a ride, etc. So we just plan a few meals and that way the kids know what to expect and no complaints. Then with the snacks, they have been earning Disney Dollars and can use them as they please. This way Im not always saying no, no, no. If you have money and want to spend it on blank its your choice. They love that mommy can't tell them what to buy.:rotfl:

I second the checking out allearsnet.com & take a look at the menu's to get an idea of what is available & at what prices. At some places a kids meal is plenty of food or splitting an adult meal with a child.

You can deffiently save money by buying food at the grocery for breakfast. Cereal & Milk, muffins, breakfast bars etc can be gotten cheap. Use the trash can as a make-shift cooler w/ ice from the hotel ice machine.

We always bring in snacks. Granola bars, fruit snacks, goldfish or pretzels, beef jerky for protein, or the peanut butter/cheese cracker things and dried fruit. It keeps my kids from starving and when we have to wait in line, they can have a little munchy snack.

One of the best things I discovered from this board is asking for ice water or a cup of ice at counter service places. My kids drink water better from a cup with a straw than a water bottle. So last time we were there, we were less dehydrated because we all drank a lot more water.

Share your meals. We went to Stage Door Cafe and ordered 4 of the meals and split them among 6 people. It was too much food. We could have gotten away with 3 meals and that would have saved us 8 or 9 bucks!

We always have breakfast at the hotel. Either the continental, if it is offered, or we bring our own stuff. That way we save a lot of money.

My little kids don't eat really well when we are at DLR. I think they are too excited to be there and just don't want to sit and eat. They seem to eat the food we bring in better than the food at DLR, so I might as well save the money!! :)

We're trying to be frugal too.

Our hotel has a breakfast, so that's helping.

We had considered doing every lunch in the park, but yeah that does add up too. I'm thinking I may pbj a few days, lunch in the park a few days. I plan on freezing some water bottles and that'll help keep them cold. We're taking a stroller so we'll keep the food with us.

Dinner I'm still on the fence about. DL closes at 8 almost every day we're there, so it'd seem silly to leave at 5, eat and go back. I dunno. not sure. Maybe pbj's for every lunch and dinner in the park LOL

We've gone with every combo imaginable, and these are some of the actual restaurants in the park where we feel like we don't have to leave the park and still get "park food".

Rancho Zocolo serves large portions. I personally like the cheese enchiladas. We typically will share a drink and share the enchiladas. You get rice and beans with it.
I ditto the chicken fusilli pasta at Pizza Port in tomorrowland. The serving is huge, more than enough to share with two people, I think. And, I've found their kids pasta meals (though not their kids' pizza meals) to be VERY generous servings. They do spaghetti with (or without) sauce and a huge meatball. Fills up even my 12 year old.
The chicken dinner at the Plaza is huge! Typically more than enough for two adults to split.
The corn dog cart on the end of main street has corn dog combo meals for around $6. That's usually a good deal, and you can grab it and sit and watch the parade.
On more than one occasion I've ordered kids' meals for both my younger two and myself. Especially at Taste Pilot's Grill in DCA. Their kids meal has two sliders and that's more than enough for me. You can typically get the PB&J uncrustable or chicken nuggets just about anywhere. I've done the pasta at PP, too. Unless I'm starving, that it typically more than enough for me. That way you get drinks, including milk if you want it, and sides. And, you can request french fries instead of fruit for some or all if you want.

Another idea, and it may sound counter intuitive, but I've found that often this will save us money overall during the day, and that's to do a big character meal for late brunch. I really liked Lilo's, and it has a wide variety of items, but not quite as expensive as Goofy's. Or Minnie's is good, too. Plus, kids under 2 eat free, so you wouldn't have to buy anything at all or worry about getting something yourself for your little one. We go for the latest available time. But, the reason I've found that to be good is that we don't each much before we go to "breakfast", maybe a granola bar or something, and then we eat alot at lunch, and then we're not all that hungry for the rest of the day. Last time we did that, DD and I split a kids meal for dinner. We just weren't all that hungry. Another time, we ate character meal for brunch, and then didn't eat dinner until after the park closed and stopped and got something at McDonalds.

We have brought entire meals in. We've also brought sandwiches only and gotten fries and onion rings, etc. I almost always bring soda, as I'm a Mt. Dew fiend, and they only sell coke products. I try to always bring water, even if I've puchased it at one of the hotel gift shops, as it's cheaper than buying it in the park. We bring kool aid singles, too, for when we're sick of plain water. When we spend the night, I typically bring cereal and milk and we eat before we go. Just FYI, you can pack a cooler as your checked item and fill it with dry foods/snacks, juice boxes and water, etc. Just not ice. We've done that a number of times and seal it with tape. The last couple of times they've unsealed it and resealed it with their own tape, so they will look into on occasion, but never had any troubles. Plus, things tend to get less broken as the outside of a cooler is pretty hard sided. To keep things from sliding, I typically pack a beach towel in the top. I don't use clothes in case there's a problem with any sort of leakage.

Also, IHOP right accross the street from DLR entrance has kids eat free every night. That has saved us some money. Mimmi's has huge portions and more than enough to share with another adult, or if you and your older child want to share something.
And, you can order from Albertsons and they'll deliver it directly to the hotel. Just go to albertsons.com.
And, finally, I think your hotel is going to be a bit of a hike down Harbor for you. Not undoable, but a bit of a hike or a trip on ART or their own shuttle (not sure which one that is for them), so going back to the hotel for lunch on a regular basis may be a challenge.

We are only there for a few days, so am trying to spend most time in parks, but we will do lots of sharing of meals, as DS doesn't always eat a huge amount.
We are also going to do the charcter brunch, which will hopefully last us a while, and at Cafe Orleans we are just going to have the frites and donuts :rotfl: it is a holiday after all.

I like the idea of some snacky stuff - ds is a huge snacker so think we might get some stuff from the gift shop at HoJos as we don't have long (anyone know what prices there are like compared to the park?)
