Eating at Disney with severe dairy allergy

Thank you for the helpful information :) Great to know that I don't need to pack in hamburger buns and that we can find him some safe waffles!!

His soy reactions are only when he actually drinks soy milk or we use soy cheese. Otherwise, he eats many products that contain soy so I am thinking the fries are probably fine. He eats fries everywhere without an issue.

Milk is definitely his biggie. This is all feeling more doable! Thanks again for your help. I thought I'd find almond milk at least in the park so that is good to be aware of that there isn't any. Kind of strange to me. We know tons of toddlers and preschoolers who are DF/SF and almost all drink almond milk and NOT rice milk :confused3

I don't know a lot of people who drink almond milk, (rice milk seems to be the drink of choice here in Florida)-but what we do is buy the Almond milk singles to use in the parks and to have in the room. I try and stock up when they have them at Publix for 1.00 each.

I suspect they chose rice milk over almond milk because rice milk is safe for those with tree nut allergies. Almond milk would cover a smaller allergy base.

Oh I bet you are right! Didn't even think about the tree nut allergies. And coconut is debatable for them too.

Maybe in the Florida climate, rice milk is preferable since it's thinner and maybe a bit more "refreshing" :confused3 Like I mentioned, we know quite a few families who are DF/SF and they choose almond or coconut since they have more nutrients to rice milk. If I have a bowl of cereal though, *I* prefer rice milk too. I like the thinness of it on cereal and reminds me more of cow's milk. But then, I am not a growing kid :rotfl2:

I'll either see if I can buy the singles or maybe just order the bigger size from Garden Grocers.

Be careful with soy cheese products; many of them still contain casein, a milk protein. My family found out the hard way that soy cheese does not mean dairy-free. We tried giving my 3yo niece chocolate rice milk instead of soy and after one sip she proclaimed it yucky and glared at us the rest of the night.

Yes, I'm aware of that some soy cheeses still have dairy. I think that is so strange! In our case, he reacts to all obvious soy though so no soy milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt, etc.

My ds doesn't like rice milk either. Funny that your niece got mad at you :rotfl: Not even the chocolate did it for her, huh? I really don't mind the taste of it but it just isn't as strong nutritionally as other milk-alternatives.

Update: I just found a 4 pk of Silk Almond milk at Target for 3.59. DD is thrilled and it was cheaper than Publix sales price, so I am happy LOL

That does seem like a good price. Thanks for sharing! I'll check my Target and maybe just plan to bring those from home. I could use one single a day in the park and then have the bigger size delivered with our Garden Grocer or Whole Foods order for having in the room. If I can fill him up with milk while we are there, I won't have to worry so much about food :rotfl2:

OOOH I am having fun now! Check the Silk website for a .55 coupon! I love when I can find little fun "safe" treats to take into the park for dd.

I think about a month ago they announced some new TS meals for kids in MK. They were aimed at being healthier, but struck me as helpful for allergies too. (grilled chicken, steak skewers, chicken drumsticks) I've been stressed about trying to plan for my DS and getting no help from Disney as far as where I might be most likely to find menu items for him. He is allergic to eggs, milk, shrimp, multiple nuts and soy and is avoiding wheat.

He is also more into the bun than the meat in it- just makes me wish I could know a location that would have a bun for him. Then I would plan to eat there rather than go somewhere and hope they can come up with one. I want to plan to be where we are the least hassle. I have until August to figure it out, but it's annoying me to not feel comfortable making ADR's because i have no idea if my picks are realistic or not. At least they will have waffles for him- he loves waffles.

Those are great new choices for the kid's meals and definitely good for most allergies it sounds like. I'm excited about that!

Are there any safe buns for your ds? Even that you could pack and take in with you? It sounds like the Udi's might be ok for us but not the egg allergic.

I'm so excited we can get safe Mickey waffles! That was a biggie for me. Mine loves waffles too.

At this time I know that Disney does not have any bread he can have. We usually make our own bread at home. The Meijer by us sells some sort of rolls he can eat and it's $6 for a 4 pack. I think the Ener-g ones they used to have are safe but I've never seen their breads in person. (a quick google search tells me they are around $1 each)
If nothing changes I will probably pick some up for our trip just to avoid the hassle- I don't know how well our homemade breads really hold up because we eat it too fast!

Not to rain on your parade, but from what I saw at the Studios last week the new "healthy" choice for kids meals is yogurt. DD used to be able to get grapes and carrots, now the kids meals have yogurt.

from allears-(ABC Comissary)

All meals include carrot sticks and Danimals Yogurt

Columbia House at MK and Pinocchio's

All meals include grapes, Dannon Danimals Yogurt

That stinks. Wonder if they have something they can sub for the yogurt.
