I saw the movie last night and enjoyed it very much. I found it hard to believe Julia Roberts eating and not worring about her weight but being at peace with it. I know she is playing a character but as far as JR a little miscasting. Wish I had the money and courage to travel around the world solo. I'd rather have a good traveling companion. Well she was finding herself so it had to be solo. The food looked so good. I could never do the India experience, it looked very difficult.

I tried to read that book, it was awful! I think I am the only one in the world that hated it. I do want to see the movie though, maybe it will be better. :)

No, you're not alone, I didn't like it either. I finished it, but barely. If the movie ever comes on tv, I MAY watch it. I like Julia Roberts.

I'll probably watch it if it comes on TV. I don't understand why you think Julia Roberts was the wrong choice. Who would be better?

I read the book and hated it too. I haven't seen the movie because I hated the book that much! I have her next book downloaded, but haven't read it yet, I hope its better than the last one.

I only liked the Italy part. The shots of the food were great. That was the best part of the movie. The rest of the movie seemed pretty boring in comparison.

Nah, I hated the book, too. And I didn't see the movie just based on how much I disliked the book. Julia Roberts seems too old for the part, IMO. :confused3

Haven't seen the movie but I am in the middle of the book right now and I like it...:confused3

I was going to read the book before I watched the movie. I read the first chapter and put it down. I did watch the movie and I enjoyed it, but I was on a plane to India at the time so that may have had something to do with it.

My wife and I both found the book to be excellent, and the movie to be good. We recently based a church group meeting around some readings from the book, and from the discussions after the reading what it seems is that the folks who enjoyed the book resonated with Gilbert's view of transformation as a life-process.

I didn't read the book either but my girlfriend did and loved it. I did enjoy the movie especially her stay in Italy. My comment about JR being wrong for the part is because she is so thin that if she went up a size you would never notice it. So when she said don't worry about going up a size made me laugh, maybe for you it's ok but for most women tehy wouldn't be too happy about it. I would love to go to Italy and eat everything and not care but I know the next day I would hate myself, lol. It's a minor point.

I thought the movie was better than the book, go figure :confused3

I enjoyed the book. I'll admit, it wasn't the type of book I couldn't put down in one sitting but never the less, enjoyed it. I just saw the movie too. I liked it (I really like Julia Roberts) but thought the book was better. Books usually provide more detail than the movies. I wondered if someone watching the movie was at all lost at times. I flet like I knew what was going on because I had read the book but wondered if the omitted pieces of the book left anyone uncertain. Of course, a movie could never put in all the details of a book. It would be 5 hours long if that was done :rotfl2:

I couldn't get past the first chapter. I haven't seen the movie yet though, so I can't comment on it.

Saw the movie but hadn't read the book. Your question is a good one.......yes, we felt slightly lost at times but not often. The movie gave us a sensation that it was skipping large parts but it wasn't terribly confusing. We really enjoyed the story line and the theme of finding yourself before giving to another. It was a good message for my daughter and young women like her.

Most of our family and friends hated the movie and my sister verbally thrashed me for liking it enough to buy. She thought the character was THE most selfish self absorbed woman of all time.

I did not feel that way at all.

I have NOT seen the movie yet--still can't bring myself to do it.

My issue with this whole "finding herself" and her "transformation"--I felt it tainted. Very tainted. $200,000 book advance tainted. (I think it was that much--that is how she afforded her three country lengthy adventure.)

And her first chapters--complaint after complaint, whine after whine....

Kinda like reading a story about Kate Gosselin camping in Alaska.

The way folks "read" Kate is how I "read" Elizabeth Gilbert. And funny how both (IMHO) were influenced by a paycheck.

Still debating on the movie, but I have a feeling that JR plays EG in a much kinder way than Elizabeth portrayed herself in her book.

I didn't get those impressions in the movie at all! Others have said the same thing you did but again I didn't read the book.......so I'm really wondering if the movie is a far cry from it's written counterpart. I really liked the Julia Roberts character and felt like her goal wasn't self absorbed but was meant to help her in her future relationships.
I could care less about her having recieved an advance on the book to be able to afford the travel. That part wasn't even mentioned in the movie and it didn't seem to play a role.........and I'm not sure why it would have made a difference. The money to travel wasn't a part of the story really IMHO.

Good luck deciding on whether to see the movie. I had NO *Kate Gosselin* feelings at all about the character and I know exactly what you meant. LOL LOL

I did not enjoy the book. I thought the author was a whiny, bratty, self-absorbed shrew. The "pray" part of the book goes on FOREVER.

I enjoyed the movie. :) Julia Roberts came off nothing like the character in the book.
