Eastern Caribbean - what to do in port for family of 5???

What excursions would you recommend in Tortola & St Thomas/St John for a family of 5 (kids will be 11,8,4 at time of cruise)?

The kids would probably most enjoy beach time or resort day pass with nice pool/beach. Maybe catamaran tour? Maybe hike?

Our young girls enjoyed Meagens Bay beach in St. Thomas. We took an excursion there but if I had to do it over again, I would save that chunk of change and take a shuttle. There are a ton of shuttles sitting outside waiting for people to get off the ship.

This is what we will be doing in December. Including skipping the excursion. One reason we chose the Eastern is because we felt the ports were safer for doing our own thing.
