We are staying at SSR in August for 15 nights during free dining and hoping to dine at some of the other resorts, some evenings.

Although we will have a hire car we would like the occasional break from driving, but we would rather not sit on a bus that stops at too many stops or worse, have to change buses.

Could anyone please suggest which resorts/restaurants would be the most convenient for this, or point me in the direction of the full bus schedules ?

I don't think you can go direct to any dinning. From SSR you take a bus to downtown Disney which is close even walking distance from SSR. BC & BW have lots of eating and again are not a one stop by bus. All locations are easy parking, if you have a car I think that is best way to get direct to were you want to go. Off site RT192 east and west has lots of everything from shoping to restraunts.

Except between resorts that share buses, all resort to resort trips require making a connection. In some cases one leg of the trip may be made on foot (no pun intended).

Can anyone tell me which resorts share buses?
About how long is the walk to from DTD to SSR as youngest will only be 3?:confused3

The walk from SSR to DtD will depend a great deal on your starting point in SSR. It's a large, spread-out property. Units near Downtown Disney have a shorter walk than units on the far side of the property.

"Which resorts share buses" can vary depending on the starting point, where buses are needed, etc.

The OP also asked about bus schedules. These don't exist. Buses run about every twenty minutes.

The shortest walk from SSR to DTD is about 15 minutes (walking at an adult pace) and that's if you are staying in the Congress Park section. If you are staying in the sections closest to the main pool, you will have to add another 10-15 minutes onto that. We have walked from Springs section to DTD and it's a pretty long walk.

What I would do is book resort restaurants that are easy to access from a park. Example: Chef Mickey's at Contemporary. You could take the bus from SSR to MK and then walk over to the Contemporary (5 minutes).

Thanks for the advice:thumbsup2

I think it sounds like a good idea to request the area nearest DTD 15 mins doesn't sound too bad and isn't there a boat also?

I will put Chef Mickey's on my list - that sounds convenient and fun:goodvibes

So,sorry to ask again but can someone explain the bus system, very slowly,in simple terms,to a total airhead?

Does each bus at SSR go to one destination or is there a route?:confused3

You can take the boat from SSR to DTD rather than walking to DTD but then you have to walk from the boat dock to the DTD bus station to catch a bus to whatever resort you want to go to.
So the easiest would be take the DTD bus at SSR, get off at DTD and change to the resort bus you want to visit.

It seemed to me that buses between the resorts and DTD ran less frequently than buses between the resorts and theme parks. Therefore, I would take the first bus from SSR to any theme park, then another bus to the resort where you are dining. As mentioned, if the resort is on the monorail, then take the bus to the MK first, and then take the monorail to the resort. (A bus to Epcot would also work. Then take the monorail from Epcot to the TTC, and the resort monorail to the resort.)

There's a reason I like to stay at an Epcot resort...LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! I would definitely want a car if I were staying at a more remote resort like SSR.

At SSR. you will be able to get a bus to DTD, a bus to MK, a bus to DHS, a bus to Epcot and a bus to AKL. The water parks are included on those buses. If you want to get to a restaurant to eat, you have a few options...
1. Be in a park that has the restaurant you want
2. Be in a park that is very close (by boat, monorail or foot) to the restaurant you want.
3. Be in the resort that houses the restaurant you want.

For example..
On the day you want to eat at Chef Mickey's, you should plan on being at MK....it's an easy walk or monorail ride over to CR from MK. If you want to eat at 'Ohana at the Polynesian or 1900 Park Fare at the GF, same thing...be at MK that day and you can take the boat or monorail over to the resort.

Want to eat at BW...maybe at ESPN Zone or Flying Fish? Plan on a day when you're going to be at either DHS or Epcot....BW, S/D, YC/BC are all within walking (or boating) distance of those parks.

You can always head to DTD and get a bus there that will get you to the resot you want. When you have come up with a list of places you want to eat, let us know and we'll tell you the best way to get there and back.

Thanks - getting a little clearer now:)

Will be back to call on your wisdom when all the troops are consulted and a list has been compiled:surfweb:

If you are going during Free Dining, I highly suggest you get ADRs. It is possible to get walk in table service, but not necessarily where you want. I have also heard of people with free dining that ended up with counter service.

I would think the bus to MK would be the simplest, then you can take a boat to Poly, GF, WL, FW or it is an easy walk to CR or the monorails to Poly, GF or CR

Thankyou Marmar, our 180 days+10 is 2/11 so trying to decide by then:)

OK, these are the definates, any comments on simplest/quickest route other than driving would be appreciated :

Chef Mickeys
1900 Park fare
boma or Sanaa

maybe:
Whispering canyon
Cape May
ohana or kona cafe

Chef Mickey's Take the Magic Kingdom bus and walk to the contemporary it is only about a 10 minute walk.

1900 Park Fare take the Magic Kingdom bus then either the boat or monorail (resort monorail) to the Grand Floridian

Ohana or Kona, Again take the Magic Kingdom Bus and then the boat or resort monorail to the Polynesian

Cape May Walk/Boat to DTD then bus to the Beach Club

Boma (YUM) or Sanna, Walk/Boat to DTD and take AKL Bus

For whispering Canyon, I think there is a boat from the Magic Kingdom or Contemporary to Wilderness Lodge so that would again be the bus to MK then the boat to WL but I am not 100 positive on that one.

Another option for the AKL and EPcot resort restaurants is to go to those parks the days you want to eat there and then go to the resort direct from the park. ( I am assuming these for dinner reservations if going for breakfast ingnore what is below)

Cape May, go to Epcot that day then exit via the international gateway and walk or take the boat to BC it is a short walk.

Boma or Sanaa Go to the AKL that day and get the bus to AKL from there.

After your meal you can get a DTD bus from the BC or AKL and walk/boat back to SSR.

If I were you and you have not already done so I would call Disney (or MS if DVC) and add a location request to my reservation for Congress Park. That is the section closest to the DTD walkway and would shorten your route. It is only a request and isn't guaranteed but a general request like that you have a good shot at getting it.

Example of resort to resort trip on one shared bus: You can go from French Quarter to Riverside. You will have to ask the driver since the order of stops may vary depending on crowding.

I think Contemporary and Polynesian and Grand Floridian are on a shared bus too.

The Contemporary, Polynesian, and Grand Floridian are on the resort monorail line.
