As EarthLink is basically an ISP that connects you to the internet/e-mail (for a fee), I doubt that they offer any "free" services. AOL is only doing it because that company is in the (long) process of transitioning from that of a typical internet service provider (with access to the internet) to a "content-only" provider (much like Yahoo, and others).
We pay $9.95/month for our earthlink account. We have two email addresses through our account. (DH and I each have one). We use Verizon FIOS for internet which includes email, but rather than switch, we pay earthlink every month.
Huh? Is it your friend or you? I'm confused. Also, what are you trying to accomplish? I thought you were looking for a free email account now you say your friend has earthlink.
Sorry, wasn't clear, I have had a lot going on these last few days and haven't had a lot of time to post.
A friend came over this past weekend and was saying she has always had earthlink and wants to KEEP her email and was wondering if there was a way for her to keep her current email address but get it for free since she is going to be getting cable modem internet access. I told her I got my AOL and gmail for free, but she wanted to keep her earthlink account, which is why I was asking specifically about earthlink, not asking for any provider.

In that case no, If she is dropping her earthlink service the e-mail with earthlink would also go. She would have to continue to pay for earthlink just to keep the e-mail address, better to just open a free e-mail account.
nope, but i still subscribe year after year. i am a college professor and i have had the email for about 8 years now, so i keep it even though i have other "free" ones. i like the archival services too...just my opinion.
