Earphones that work on the plane?

Does anyone have experience with earphones that work well on airplanes?

I got a travel dvd player for Christmas to use on our trips, and I've had some trouble finding earphones that bring the volume up loud enough for us to use it on the plane. At home, the volume on the player through earphones is great, but as soon as the engine on the plane starts going, we've got to struggle to hear what's going on in the movie.

I started with some generic earphones that barely worked, then switched out with my iPod earbuds. Those helped, but I still had to have them placed perfectly in my ears and listen closely to follow along.

Anyway, my sister and I wanted to get some that will be better, but not necessarily the $200 noise-cancelling Bose ones.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

TIA!

You can find noise cancelling headphones for less than $200 at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. I don't know how well they work, but they would be better than your Apple earbuds. FWIW, I am not a Bose fan, but my understanding is that those $300-$350 noise cancelling Bose headphones are really, really nice and comfortable. That's a lot of money for headphones if you don't use them often though.:)

My husband flies a lot and has the Bose noise-canceling headphones. They're expensive but it's a small price to pay for his hearing.

You should be able to hear through normal earbuds. If it's still not loud enough, then you will damage your hearing by going to anything louder. Unless you use noise cancelling ear phones (and not at full volume) you should still be able to hear the white noise from the plane as well as the electronic you are listening to. Safeguard your hearing--if you damage it there is nothing you can do to bring it back.

The average jet cabin Db level is 85. Add to that the electronic device loud enough to be heard over the ambient cabin noise and you are at 95-100. Permanent hearing loss can occur from exposure to 95 Db for four hours, 100 Db for two hours. just some food for thought.

The sennheiserusa and the shure headphones / earbuds are the way to go.
According to my dd, the ipod ones are useless. I have the ones by shure, but, it was a toss between them and the senn. When I put mine in (which takes a few days to get used to using them) I hear nothing but my ipod.

Sennheiser :thumbsup2 Smaller and cheaper than Bose, sound quality is just as good or better IMHO
