HI everyone,

DD1 is getting her first communion next Sunday and we want to get her ears pierced for the occasion.

The only problem is that she will be starting soccer in 2 weeks and can't wear ear rings during the games.

Does anyone know if you can remove the studs for a few hours and then put them back in? Will there be a problem with them closing? She would only have them out for between 1 and 3 hours on 1 day a week. She will have them in solid for 2 weeks before she has to take them out.

Thanks for any help you can give us!

in my experience, (2 dd's with pierced ears) it is not a good idea. The ears close very quickly and it may cause her pain to put them back in. A thin layer of skin can grow over the hole. Plus, it opens the ears up to more infection because normally you leave them in during the healing/scarring process.

Wait until after soccer, the holes can close in just a few hours. I know this because it happened to dd 2 times during soccer season. 2 weeks is not enough time to be able to take them out for a while.

The studs that are put in when the ears are first pierced are supposed to stay in for at least six weeks.

Thanks, everyone!

I got my ears pierced when I was 15, almost 25 years ago so I wasn't sure!

We will wait until after her birthday and soccer season being over!

We made the mistake of getting DD's ears pierced during soccer season- it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and we didn't think about the fact that she couldn't play with them in. She had to take them out for games- she would run over right before the game started, I'd take them out, then she would run back right after the game and I would stick them back in (and yes, most of the time, had to force them through). We carried alcohol wipes with us, and I would wipe her posts and ears down when putting the earrings back in. DD was a real trouper about it, but I know it hurt her poor ears,. If I had it to do over, I definitely would have waited until the season was finished before getting her ears pierced.

Maybe you can promise DD to get her ears pierced after the season is over (and use stick-ons for First Communion). Also, some refs will allow girls to keep their earrings on if they aren't hoops or dangles, and they cover them with band-aids. DD was allowed to do that for 1 game.

DH and I should've come here first before mentioning it to DD! She is so upset right now! (Just blew her nose!):scared1:

We did promise that after the last game I would take her to get them pierced! I also mentioned finding some stick on earrings for communion next Sunday. Or maybe finding some clip ons for the occasion.

DH is DD1s coach and he forgot about it too. He remembered about having to called earrings before each game from last season.

Instead we are going to get her a camera for her communion gift. That was supposed to be her birthday present but this will help her get through the season! Gotta go shopping for that tomorrow after we get our taxes done!

Thanks again for all of your thoughts! I will share them with her tomorrow to help her deal with the situation. She actually said she didn't want to play soccer but I told her that it is too late to get out of that! She'll be fine tomorrow!

sry to hear that she is upset :grouphug:

I'm going to go against the group on this one. I got my ear pierced and took the stud out after two weeks for periods of time (and also swapped it to a hoop). I never had issues, sure it was a little tender for a few weeks, but as long as you keep the earring clean while putting it in, I don't see an issue. I'd recommend using Bactine Spray to help promote healing when taking it in and out.

One thing, DO NOT GO TO A MALL to get her ears pierced, please go to a piercing shop and have them pierced with a proper needle not a blunt ended piercing stud.

I would let her get her ears pierced and then just put some tape over them for the games. Most leagues have provisions for newly pierced ears anyway.

Hmmm, they let our soccer kids wear tape over stud earrings if needed; maybe ask and see if that's an option???

I would have to disagree with this. Our league does not allow for earrings at all. They may not cover them with tape, or with band-aids. Earrings are simply not allowed in either of the two leagues DS plays in, nor in the league he refs for. It's written into the rules and bylaws of both leagues.

OP I'd definitely wait until after soccer season. This past Fall DS was reffing a game of U8 (6 and 7 year old) girls, and had to ask one of the girls to remove her earrings. She burst into tears, as she had just had them done 2 days prior. :guilty:

The rule is there for a reason.

Do you really want to chance her getting hit there and the earring goes throw. I sure wouldn't want to get hit where the earring is. :confused3

It is like wearing things in you hair when you have a helmet on you head. You get hard enough on the head that thing is going in your head. Saw a picture at the safety village of a kid that left a baseball hat on under the helmet and the button went into his head. That picture sticks with me every time the kids have helmets on.

DD got her ears pierced just before basketball season. She did have to take the earrings out for each game, the only issue we had is that the "piercer" earrings are really hard to pull the back off of. So, we just switched out the earrings so they would slip off easier and she took them out right before the game started and put them back in right after. We didn't seem to have any issue with the skin growing over in that short amount of time.

It is a rule in our league about earrings! NONE can be worn. She can wait until the season ends! I believe that is the first weekend in June!

She is not fond of pain so having to take them out and put them back in again could prove troublesome. We'll pick out some special earrings this week. She will also get some of mine. This will also give me a chance to sort through some of mine that I never wear that she can look forward to wearing and we can practice taking care of them. It will be like training!

We all make mistakes as parents and we learn from those mistakes. Ours was not thinking about this before mentioning it to her. She'll be happy with the camera as her old one which was a hand me down from us just broke recently.

Thanks again for all of your comments!

I know in the league I coached in band aids were not acceptable. I left many a game with someone's earings in my pocket
