We just received an invitation to a dear friends (son's) Eagle Scout ceremony and reception. I know this is a big rite of passage in the Boy Scouts and a special ocassion. We live in VA and this will take place in FL and we are unable to attend. I am wondering what an appropriate gift would be for a young man becoming an Eagle Scout. Does anyone know?

Here's one I like... Go to a coin dealer and buy the scout a 2004 Silver Eagle $1 coin.

Hmmm... I have two nephews who are Eagle Scouts, and we just gave them money.

You could give the Eagle Scout cash or make a donation to the charity of their choice.

Probably enjoys camping since he is in scouts. How about a headlamp made by Petzl for example. It is battery powered and you wear it like a headband. It's comfortable and those little LED lights put out a lot of light. It's great for working on the car or walking at night.

This is a subject very dear to my heart - as my son achieved the Eagle Scout Rank in June of 2003!

An Eagle figurine is nice or anything with an eagle. My DS received a fleece throw with an Eagle, he takes it to campouts. He also received a really nice Eagle bookmark that he treasures.

You can also buy some really nice Eagle frames. The BSA has an online catalog at www.scoutstuff.org - they have great gifts in all price ranges.

I will admit that he received a lot of money, which he banked into his college fund. $20.00-$25.00 was the average for cash gifts.

Many people just gave cards, and that was fine, too. Just knowing that over 100 people cared enough about him to attend his Court of Honor meant the world to him. Relatives from California also sent him card of congratulations. :)

Thanks for the added suggestions, I now have a lot of things to think about.

Thanks Pam for the website and congrats to your DS on his achievement. You should be very proud.

I asked my DS what he would want...of course he said the money so he could buy something specific. Younger DS said how about something that he collects. Maybe you could contact his mom and ask if he has a collection of anything or if he is saving for something.

I had a cousin that used his money for a 2 week trip out west. He then sent postcards from places like Yellowstone, Tetons, Mount Rushmore...as his thank you cards to the people that gave him money or gift cards.
