Hi, It's time for my youngest to come up with an Eagle Scout Project. His older brother wanted to do a Blood Drive but they told him no & one thing led to another & he never did complete his Eagle. So for this son I'm hoping to come up with a great idea at first so he doesn't have to go back to the drawing board. Give me your best ideas! Thanks! :thumbsup2

A local scout here made trails and placed benches in our town's park.

How about some home repairs for an elderly neighbor.

We had an Eagle Scout that was a member of our church build a swing set and climbing platform in our nursery play yard. It's been there at least 10 years now.

For my brother's Eagle Scout project, he collected donations and art supplies (crayons, paper, markers, etc.) from local businesses and individuals and created art kits for kids that he donated to the various shelters. :sunny:

what about collecting gifts for the needy, clothing drive, taking clothes to a homeless shelter or something?

Eagle scout projects have to be done for an organization and not for an individual. A way around this rule is for the local church or civic organization to request and review the repairs for the neighbor. Otherwise an eagle scout project solely for an individual is not appropriate.

A flag retirement ceremony. Advertise it and spend some time collecting old, worn flags. Have the appropriate ceremony. Oh, and invite your Cub Scouts - participation helps them fulfill some requirements as well.

Blood drives are not an appropriate eagle scout project in our district. An eagle scout project involves leadership and there is very little opportunity for the scout to show any real leadership in a blood drive. Believe or not this type of project has been debated on a scouting listserve and there are some leaders who are really against blood drives as eagle scout projects.

One way to find a project is to go the sponsoring organization of the troop and see if they have a project that needs to be done. Your son could also go to a local elementary school and ask the adminstration there if they have a project. We had one school that was redoing their playground and about six kids (from our troop and another troop) found different eagle scout projects to do from building benches to redoing the jogging track.

My DH did the same thing for his Eagle Scout project about a million years ago. ;)

This sounds awesome-it's so rare to find a way to dispose of flags.

This is a very solemn and serious project. The flags are burned and buried in a very specified manner. No one from my troop has done this project but it has been done on numerous occassions and is a good project. If one it interested in such a project, contact a local vetrans group and see if they will sponsor the project. Again, the project has to be done at the request and approved by an organization.

At our school, an Eagle Scout just built a small fenced-in garden for the elementary children. The teachers are to use it while teaching science.

This is something our Troop did as an entire Troop. And yes very solemn and the flags are all burnt. Does not tend to fall into an Eagle Project category.

contact a local veterans group

This is a great idea. DS#1 contacted the local Veterans Council in our town and together with the Veterans Board, my DS researched all the Town's Veterans markers. If I could find his Eagle app I would quote it for you. This was 2002. He put together a fabulous portfolio/booklet listing all the Markers as well as a history beyond each marker. This was the request of the Veteran Board as they had been looking for someone to do this for sometime.
DS#2 contacted the local Catholic elementary school where our Troop is affiliated and asked the Pastor if he needed anything done for the school. The Pastor asked my DS to paint/repair/refurbish 350 folding chairs that are in the Church Hall that are used all the time for the elementary students attending the school.

Remember the Eagle Scout-to-be MUST show LEADERSHIP throughout the Project.

The Board reviewing the Project App will ask the Scout how he plans on doing his project and showing leadership.

Good Luck. As the mom of TWO Eagle Scouts, you will find it is an achievement that is well respected. The BSA is making it harder and harder to reach Eagle. I have seen so many merit badge books over the years and the requirements change often and they are more involved, more indepth and to be completed in a shorter time. I had an Eagle Scout in 2002 and 2004.

What does HE want to do? His project should be something about which HE is passionate.

Here's a Girl Scout link with Gold Award ideas -- I'd guess they're probably adaptable for Boy Scouting: http://www.geocities.com/gsgreenneck/Goldaward.htm

By the way, my daughter is going to do a project with Seeing Eye Dogs -- she's going to do something to encourage people to adopt puppies, which will eventually become Seeing Eye dogs. She became interested in this way back when someone from the Dog place visited her Brownie troop years ago. I think it's going to be a tought project because she'll be asking people to take on a very big commitment.

Some that have been done in our area:

Benches/trail markers in the State Park
Elementary school projects - painting maps/solar systems on the blacktop; remodeling planters; making class gardens
Organizing/Conducting a series of classes at a retirement home centered around a theme

My son did a 3 lane dog run for our local animal shelter. It you go talk to them, they may have some ideas of things they need done. Our director had 3 projects she needed done and even had the places lined up to get donated materials. My son had to draw the plans, get the materials and line up the labor.

My Eagle Scout son modified a major nature trail bridge to wheel chair accessible at a city park. The Park was very pleased because they did not have the money to do the modification. HOWEVER, the days of companies willingly furnishing materials for Easgle Scout projects seems to be a thing of the past around here (unless you know somebody, of course). My son ended up begging and borrowing for the money to complete the project because, despite going to multiple Home Depots and Lowes, the only contributions were a 10% discount on the lumber and a few sacks of concrete that was in torn sacks that could not have been sold anyway. Some of the stores acted like they would have been in trouble for helping a Scout.

Some other Eagles in his troop worked in conjunction with the fire department to collect and install smoke detectors in low income homes.

Why not Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society, I creat my teen team every year. Its really fun and you raise alot of money. I dont know much about Eagle Scouts so im sorry if this doesnt work. He can do it either way because its probably the best. If you want more info im a semi-expert so you can just PM me

If you dont have a relay in your area he could start one up.

an eagle scout candidate in our area teamed with the local water board and worked with them to design a 'sign' that warned against dumping inappropriate liquids in drains and sewer openings. the small sign has a fish logo and short wording about how the drains feed into wildlife streams-our small town now has these signs inset into the concrete adjacent to all residential guttered sewer openings.

a friend whose son became an eagle scout a few years ago contacted a local school that was in the planning stages of building some sort of outdoor area (some type of area for performances and such)-he volunteered to work on some aspect of designing a small portion (some portion of the seating). he worked with the guidance of one of the architects, and went so far as to research/suggest funding resources that enabled the school to complete the project ahead of time/budget (i think he looked into people donating a portion of stone/concrete benching which held inscriptions of names/ 'class of' indicators).
