E-ZPASS in Florida - update

So Epass is different than EZ Pass? But EPass and Sunpass are the same (at least work the same)?

There is currently no device that can be used in Florida and multiple other states (say Georgia)?

I'm sorry, I'm confused.

E-PASS is the electronic toll collection system of the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX).
SunPass is the electronic toll collection system of the FL Department of Transportation (FDOT) & the FL Turnpike Enterprise (FTE).

E-PASS & SunPass work on all FL Tolls Roads and both have interoperability agreements with GA (Peach Pass) and NC (Quick Pass).

Current E-ZPASS states are: Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia,West Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky.

Later this year, CFX will officially accept E-ZPASS on toll roads they operate. Toll roads owned by FDOT will NOT accept E-ZPASS.

Thank you. So if I want to cover Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida (say all toll roads), I would need an E-Pass AND an E-Z Pass, correct?

But if I have both, what happens if I go through a CFX toll, will it deduct fees from both?

Not confusing at all. :P

As of today, yes.

CFX will be releasing a new transponder they are calling 'E-PASS Xtra' which will work in FL, GA, NC & all E-ZPASS states.

If you have two transponders mounted that are compatible with the toll road you are traveling on, yes.

If you have removable transponders, you can remove one and place it in the RFID blocking package they should have provided at the time of purchase. This would prevent double charging.

Would that work on the turnpike though since CFX isn't in charge of that? When is the Xtra supposed to be released?

Thanks.

All E-PASS transponders (including the upcoming Xtra) are accepted on non-CFX operated toll roads & bridges in Florida.

When is the Xtra supposed to be released?
No exact date yet, hopefully soon. I plan on upgrading to the E-PASS Xtra once it becomes available as I travel to Maryland once a year or so.

Found this on the CFX website this morning (8/2/2018):
The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) and the E-ZPass Group, a network of toll road agencies operating from Maine to North Carolina and west through Illinois, announced today that the E-ZPass toll transponder will be accepted on CFX’s Metro Orlando toll roads beginning September 1, 2018. CFX is the first Florida toll agency to join the E-ZPass network bringing the total number of states served by E-ZPass to 17.

Toll roads shown in purple on the mapped linked to below are the ONLY toll roads where E-ZPASS will be accepted:

Well, that's very late summer!

Note that on the map, 528 Beachline is not purple between MCO & WDW; and on 417 towards WDW, the purple ends at the I-Drive exit.

@erionm Thanks for the link to the map...that'll be very useful once EZpass is accepted in parts (assuming 9/1/18).

What a mess this is with all the agencies, transponder types, etc. (Still better than waiting in cash lines though!) By the time this all gets resolved, they'll move to toll-by-plate, which is what we're starting to see in the northeast.

We have toll-by-plate in FL, but the toll rates are higher, and in rental cars the companies add their own set of fees.
