You can do all things just like you're used to when booking through VA. With an e-ticket, you don't need to take anything with you*. The print basically is for your own convenience. They check your paspport, look up your ressie based on that and you're done. Even if things go 'hick-up'**, you've got more than enough with that ABCDE1 number.
With that number they can look up anything and everything hooked to it. When the booking was made, if there were any changes made, you name it. Heck, if you've got a savvy enough attendant they can even look up how many times you've changed your seating arrangements and from which seat to which.
We always fly with e-tickets, have been doing so for a couple of years now. Always check in without anything other than our passport. Very easy, friendly on both customer, flight attendant working the check in desk and environment (no unneeded paper used)
* some airlines want you to present the creditcard used to purchaged the ticket with, in which case it'll be stated clearly in the T&C. Bookings through continental.com don't have this requirement. (nor does VA, just looked it up)
** Don't sweat fearing a hick-up!! E-tickets are the norm for most airlines nowadays and have been around for years. Thousands get used daily, a hick up is very very very rare. Even if it does, they'll be able to fix things and get you on your way.
