I have a nook color, bought it for about $150 (now you can get them for even $110 or so) refurbished (was practically new, with even the wrap etc.). The good thing is that you can put android on it, so you can boot it to be a nook or an android (my daughter boots into the nook, and we usually get into android).
In android you can get nook, kindle and google books apps so there's less "lock in" there. The screen is gorgeous IPS like the Kindle Fire.
The refurb nook color can be a good option, if you have a slightly tech inclined person near you.. (not too techie, almost anybody can do it)
