Hi everyone! I am thinking about getting my ds9 an e-reader for christmas. Anyone have one and have any feedback about what is a good one to get. I am pretty clueless about what is out there. I figure it will be good for him in the car for reading. Thanks so much!

We are a Nook Color family. We have one tucked away for our newly 10 year old, who is an avid reader.

I have one and got one for middle DS for christmas last year. While we don't have one the tablets (Kindle Fire/Nook Color/Tablet) are amazing but if you have something that will do something similar or if you don't want him to play games then the standard e-readers will do you just fine. One thing I would look at before you decide which one to buy is which books your DS is going to read - some books are only available on the Fire/Color/Tablet options because of the number of pictures.

Kindle is definitely the more popular option and the book prices are definitely cheaper but I like the B&N options better because I have issues with the way Amazon handles the ownership of your library. I got DS one with the 3G option which make for a great choice if you can find it as that way we can get him a new book while in the car on a long road trip - no planning ahead. If you don't go with one of the tablet options you'll also want to get him one of the book lights and a cover.

Something I considered when looking for e-readers for my kids (11 and 13) is whether or not graphic novels would be supported. Nook Tablets I know support them and I believe the Kindle Fire does as well. The Nook Color doesn't at the moment but there's a software upgrade in the works right now which is expected to be released shortly that will enable the device to support graphic novels. I ordered Nook Colors for them. The Nook Color will support some apps, works on youtube and email, and supports movies and music in addition to books. The same software upgrade that'll make it compatible with graphic novels will also allow it support netflix and hulu if those are important to you. The Color also has the same ability to run off an SD card that the Tablet has. I couldn't see spending an extra $100 on the Nook Tablet when a refurbished Nook Color will do everything my kids need, just not quite as fast.

Both of my kids (10 and 8) are getting Kindle Touches this year. They both have itouches that they use for music, apps, etc. I wanted them to have a true reader without games or apps to distract them!

I just bought my youngest daughter (8) a Nook Color for her birthday. We've looked at all of them at Best Buy to get a feel for them. I love the way the Nook Color was designed with kids in mind (to an extent).
