I think someone is trying to scam me into something.
I go on ebay often, but I've never sold anything on ebay ever.
I got an e-mail from someone saying to send them a tracking number for this item, they e-mailed me twice (didn't get 2 e-mails) in regards to it. There's a picture of a camera. Auction supposedly ended April 27th, there was no price as to how much this camera was either.
So, I go on ebay to see if someone hacked into my account and was selling things? :confused3 there is nothing listed under sold.
What is going on, I am a little nervous, what should I do?

Ignore it and avoid clicking on any links, it is a phishing scam.

Are you using Paypal anywhere? I know there were problems with hacking into Paypal accounts on Ebay, but this was quite a while ago. I would deal directly with Ebay to resolve any issues, and not reply to the emails you have received from the supposed 'buyer".

I clicked on the link to his username through the e-mail and it said network could not be found, do you think I am going to get a virus, or is there anyway this person could have gotten any of my info from me clicking on that link?

Yes, I used paypal w/ ebay.

If you clicked on a link in that email to get to Ebay and entered your Ebay password, you need to go back to Ebay (directly, not through the email) and change your password. The email probably was trying to get your password info.

::yes:: yes. Never, never, never click on ANYTHING in ANY type of email like this. They probably now have your info.

I went on ebay but not through the link in the e-mail.
I removed my cards from paypal just in case, I can always add them back later right?
n i just changed my ebay password
think Im ok?

I'm not sure what you clicked on so to be safe, update your anti-virus and run a full scan. Also download this software and run it. It's an anti-malware program that is highly rated. Download the free version.

They may follow up with a fake payment email. Ignore it.

Am I understanding that your account shows you are selling items, but you actually are not? If so, you need to get in touch with eBay.

When you got this email, did you click on the response and then put in your ebay name and password? If so, they would now be able to access your ebay. Go immediately and change your paypal & ebay paswords. If not, then you should be safe. That type of emial is just a phising email, a way for someone to get control of your account.

Like other posters have said, change your ebay AND paypal passwords just to be sure..and also..forward the email you received..with FULL headers attached..to both spam@ebay.com, and spam@paypal.com..it's a phishing scam, and sending them the emails will help them track and stop these abusers..good luck

p.s. I DO buy on ebay once in awhile..last week purchased some ink..got an email from the seller..but immediately following that one..also received one from some unknown person, supposedly using the 'ask a seller a question' thing on ebay ..that I needed to contact them..it also contained a link..which Norton promptly told me was a fraudulent site..I didn't click on it..as I haven't sold anything on ebay in years..so I know I didn't have any questions to answer..lol..I forwarded it to ebay..and they let me know it was from a known phisher, and that they were working to stop these people!

I just want to add in here as well. Any emails you receive about any Ebay auctions you should also have that same email in your Ebay account under messages.
I too have received same emails and go right to my Ebay account and click on messages if it's not in my messages I go back to the original email that was sent and forward it to Ebay.
I then check my Paypal account to see if any suspicious activity has occurred.

No, my ebay account shows I am not selling anything, but got an e-mail (sent to my e-mail address, not the ebay account) saying I sold them a camera and they want the tracking # for it. So I went on ebay (I opened up a new tab to go on e-bay) to see if I was selling anything, thinking maybe someone hacked into my account and sold stuff, but no, nothing.

The only thing I clicked on that link from the email was the person's name to get some info, but it said network failed or timed out or something like that.

I changed all my passwords and took my cards off paypal, just in case.

Thanks, I sent them the email.

I've had this email a couple times. It takes a threatening tone, claiming that I've sold an item (often vague on exactly what the item is) and haven't followed through on the sale.

I sell on ebay occasionally, but I've never received an email like this when I was actually selling anything, and I know with 100% certainty that I've never been dishonest on ebay . . . so I know it's all a scam.

Ignore it.

On the same topic, I've had multiple emails telling me that my PayPal account is in jeopardy, that someone is hacking into it . . . but it's always arrived on my personal email account, while DH and I keep a separate account for our ebay purchases/sales. Again, it's a scam.

You have to be so careful these days.

This is where your computer is now in danger. You clicked on something. It doesn't matter what you clicked on. It doesn't matter what it said. You clicked on something and it may have activated a virus or spyware onto your computer. It doesn't matter even if it said network failed or timed out, because, the hackers could have programed a page to come up saying that, so you think you are safe, when you've downloaded the virus. Now, it just waits until you use your credit card for something, or as you've done, gone to eBay & PayPal and entered your passwords.

I visit another website frequently. A couple months ago hackers got in and inserted some coding where just visiting the website unleashed a viscous Trojan horse. No one even had to click on anything. I went to my favorites, clicked on the link as usual, and BAM! got hit. Dozens of other people got the virus. (My PC was safe because Firedancer, here, had previously helped me install a lot of safeguards ahead of time. It tried to upload nasty stuff but was successfully blocked. Plus I had Malwarebytes installed & was able to run a couple of scans to be sure.)

Some didn't even know where the virus came from, until they were able to connect the dots much later. The web page looked exactly the same as always, but the Trojan horse coding was hidden on the page. So, you could have gotten a page programmed to look like a "timed out" page while it was installing a Trojan horse virus and you still don't know it.

Definitely do what a PP said and install the free Malwarebytes program and run a full scan as well as an updated anti-virus scan. It takes time to do, but a lot less time than if your PC is turned into toast by a nasty virus, or if your financials are hacked.

I forgot to add that when you run Malwarebytes you should click on the "update" tab first to get the latest database updates, then run the scan. You even have to run the update the first time after downloading it.

I ran the malware thing (I am so computer illiterate its just sad) but it said I had 6 infected files and then I quarantined them, anything else I should do?
What were the 6 files, do someone have my personal info now?

I get this kind of email all the time...I don't have an ebay nor paypal account and never bought anything using either service so I know it's a scam and just delete them.

Without seeing the log and list of what it was, there is no telling what it was. It could have been on your computer for a long time since you have never run a Malware program before. It may not have been from clicking on anything in the Ebay scam email. This actually has been a blessing in disguise since it got you to check out your computer. Make it a habit to update and run the Malware program and your antivirus on a regular basis.

Edited to add: if you go back into the Malwarebytes program and click on the quarantine tab you should be able to see the names of what you quarantined. If you post that maybe we can tell you if you should be concerned. I'm not an expert on this by any stretch of the imagination but I'm good at searching for info on stuff.

You can also click on the logs tab and double click on the name of the most recent log and it will pull up the text of the log so you can see what it did.
