I'd like a dyson. I'm going to make that one of 2011 goals to find one on sale -- kohls 30% or something.

So I go to look for one online -- I was interested in the asthma/allergy one although now I think they don't have a specific asthma/allergy one.

we don't have pets.

we do have both carpets and wood floors.

anyone have any advice?

I have the DC17...love it! My Target in Brick, NJ had 5 of the DC17 All Floor on an end cap for half price on New Year's eve. I told two of my friends who were hoping to each get one. Call the Targets in your area and see if they have any on clearance...I believe the price was around $225. :thumbsup2

Consumer Reports never rates Dysons very highly. You might want to check the CR website.

We got the same deal at our Target in VA:cool1: They were half price, for $225, Dyson DC17. I have been looking for a good vacuum and so far this one has been good--of course I have only had it for a few days.

I have a Dyson and hate it. It is the worst vacuum I've owned, and the most expensive. I can't wait until I can get a new one to replace it.

We have the DC 33 and I LOVE IT! We have 4 cats and it does an amazing job. We decided on this one instead of the purple animal one because we have no carpet in our house, just 2 area rugs. The difference between those is that the animal has extra brushes to pull allergens and animal hair out of carpets. If you use it on hardwood, it actually blows it around making it harder to vacuum.

Ours doesn't have the ball, but it was an extra $100 for it and we couldn't justify it. It still maneuvers really well and since I've never had the ball, I don't know what I'm missing other than the test drive in store.

The only thing I don't like is the length of the wand. It's huge. The hose attached to it is very rigid, but I'm hoping that will relax/loosen up over time. The wand though is really long which is great for vacuuming tops of molding and the ceiling, but a big pita when trying to vacuum something like couch cushions or under the couch which is relatively close. The suction it has is amazing though. The canister is large enough for me to do the entire downstairs, about 800 sqft all at once.

Lucky you! I was there yesterday and ours was still $299 down from $399.

Totally agree - a friend talked me into getting a Dyson - she swore by it. I think it's a pain to switch from upright to using the wand. I don't think it cleans any better than my hoover I used to own. And we used to have a cat who shed quite a bit. No difference in cleaning from what I can tell. I make my husband do the vacuuming now as I can't stand to use the Dyson:rotfl2:

ANother dyson owner who is less than pleased. I have had it serviced twice in the past three years b/c it stopped working. Thankfully they do have a 5 year warranty - but I did have to pay $40 each time as parts are covered but not the servicing. As long as it is under warranty I will keep it and keep using it. But if it breaks after my warranty period is over I will get rid of it.

Also - several other times it has stopped working. Their CS was able to trouble shoot over the phone with me. But for the price of this vacuum that shouldn't happen as often as it has in my case.

I must say that when it is working it is a very good vacuum. It is just a hassle when it doesn't work.

We had an old canister vac (Rainbow) and then an Oreck and finally decided to buy an Oreck. I absolutely love it. We've had no problems in the year that we've owned it and it picks up so much more than all the other vacuums we've had. I have no idea what the model number is, but its the Animal Ball.

I just got my Dyson DC17 Animal about a month ago and love it. IT is so smooth on my very thick carpet. With my old vacuum I used to break out in a sweat and it would take me 40 min vacuuming the same area. Now it is so easy, I can switch to the wand much easier and it only takes me about 25 min. Love it! Oh and with my old vacuum and others that I have tried, my cat would run away in fear. He no longer does that with this one. He sits and watches me. I can carry on a conversation with this one on. And yet it is working really well.I bought it from Costco on-line and it was delivered in about 5 days.

I ditto looking into other brands. I have two co-workers that have Dysons and they hate them! One of them got an Oreck instead and they love it. I have another co-worker that has an Oreck and they love it too.

Personally I don't have much carpet and use a Hoover I got on sale/30% off at Kohl's 6 years ago, and it does the job.

Used a Dyson (not sure which model) for 6 weeks. Hated it! Was used on carpet and tile floors. I just don't think it did a very good job and was a PITA to use in general.

We have a Rainbow and love it. We've had it 6 years and it is still going strong. They are pricey, but worth it IMO.

We got the Dyson animal canister vac (can't remember the model #). Got it at kohl's with a 30% off and free shipping + kohls cash back. We had an old Oreck and a different canister vac. They were both very old so we splurged on the Dyson canister.
OMG - DH loves it! He vacuums a couple times a week now because he loves it so much. We have carpet, hardwood, & tile flooring and it works well on all of them.
It has a ton of extra accessories if you get the animal version.

i worked for dyson here's a few things that might help
dc07 and dc14 have the same suction
different colors ONLY means different accessories NOT suction power
dc17 has two motors more power
the ball vacuums are the only ones that have maneuverability meaning pivots around itself so you can instantly change direction with just a turn of the wrist.

did there used to be an astham/allergy one and no there isn't? I even looked on their site and it said all dysons were asthma /allergy certified. ?????

Hate mine too!

Our last house had a central vac and I LOVED it!!! Before that I had my Mom's old Electrolux canister from the late 60's. Worked great even though it was ugly! I have a new rechargeable Electrolux for my hard wood and tile floors which is great so far. I only have to use the Dyson on carpets now.
