Dyson Vaccums

Another Dyson fan. There's a filter that you're supposed to rinse out every 6 months or so. I finally did it after a year. Truthfully, I didn't see anything in the filter but rinsed it anyway.

My favorite is how easy the Dyson empties. My Hoover Windtunnel is gross when it comes to this. I always have to dig in and push the junk out, and then there's that nasty vacuum smell because the filter gets so gunked up. P-U!!

Much as I'll never love vacuuming, the Dyson has made it a much simpler job. :thumbsup2

I am probably going to be the lone dissenting voice...
My in laws have the Animal and they LOVE it. I tried to use it at their house over Christmas and found it very awkward.

I just ordered the Dyson Animal with the Ball. I'm pretty hard on vacuums, I guess, since I've burned up 3 expensive ones in the past 5 years. My Orrick broke last week and I'm waiting for the new Dyson to arrive any day. Can't wait to see. I've never gone this long without vacuuming, so it certainly has it's work cut out for it. :dog:

Oh, please, please, please post an update comparing the two. I've been debating between the two and would love to know which is better. I know people who love both, especially the Dyson, but no one who has used both. Does that make sense?

OK...
I have a Hoover Wind Tunnel (top of the line) that I absolutely LOVE...it gets up soooo much crud.
When we bought it, I did the test thing by vacuuming with the old vacuum and then with the new one...what a difference!

So, after reading all your info, wondering if I should upgrade? Anyone have input for me?

Oh geez I know what you are talking about! I hate that nasty vacuum smell too! :crazy2:

Pros -
Love it, love it, love it. Suck every hair up (I have 2 pets).
Stylish. I have the canister model, and I can just leave it in the living room. Every guest comments on how great it looks. My apartment is small, so this is perfect for me.

Cons -
I have to empty it every "round", and by that, I meat every 200 sq feet or so. Maybe my rooms are dirty, but it sucked up a lot of junk. I have hardwood floor too (which means it'll probably suck more stuff up if you have carpet). Otherwise it'll clogged.
It's kinda tough to put them together each time. It's not as easy as the stand up model, on the other hand, it's not as bulky.
Price. It's expensive no matter how to justify it.

I am very happy though. I feel people at the Dyson company actually cares. The design just makes sense. It sounds tacky, but that's exactly what I think each time I use it.

This is from the 2004 Consumer Reports Buying Guide

1. Hoover Windtunnel

3. Eureka Boss Smart Vac (A CR best buy, highest performance for the dollar)

14 Dyson DC07...a very good bagless vac, but has confusing controls. Noisy, hard to push and pull, no headlamp

"You can get a very good vacuum cleaner for $150 to $300 or so; paying more doesn't buy better performance."

They said it...not me.

I subscribe to Consumer Reports on the Internet. Here is the latest:

1) Kenmore (Sears) (Rating: 79/100) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 (A CR best buy, highest performance for the dollar)

2) Kenmore (Sears) (76/100) Progressive with Direct Drive 36932 (A CR best buy)

3) Hoover WindTunnel Self Propelled Ultra U6439-900 (74/100)

5) Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-900 (70/100)

9) Dyson DC15 The Ball All Floors (67/100)
A very good, bagless vac. Brush on/off switch.Full bin alert. Overload protection for blower fan and rotating brush motors. Hose longer than most. Lacks suction control. Lacks headlamp.

15) Dyson DC07 All Floors (66/100)
A very good bagless vac, but has confusing controls. Hose longer than most. Noisy. Hard to push and pull. No headlamp. HEPA filter (washable):

I love consumer reports, I really do, but they put a lot more into their recommendations than just performance. Sometimes that is to your benefit (like when they factor in resale value & gas mileage on a car) and sometimes it's pointless (they don't like the cost).

I've had the Eureka--I passionately HATED it. It also started having serious problems after just a year. Granted, I did have 3 dogs at the time...

Before that, I had the Sears. I loved that vacume. It lasted 4 years and DH ran it over with the car; was starting to go though Eureka was rated better by CR, so... As I said, that was a mistake.

I currently have the Hoover. Starting to have problems. I don't think it is any where as good as the sears either.

What I want in a vacume is super suction. Long lasting. Still have 2 dogs and needs to keep up. Easy to use. Could care less about cost as long as it lasts. My sis buys a vacume every year & probably ends up spending more in the long run.

Consumer Reports is the only person I've run into that DOESN'T like the Dyson. :confused3

My parents have had one for 4 hours. They love it! It is still going strong and trust me, that thing takes a lot of abuse.

You have to be careful though. Many people grow attatched to their Dysons. In fact...it's practically a member of the family. My sister occasional says, "Where's Dy Dy?" My mom calls it "Dyson" as if it's her child! LMAO!!

ETA - customer service is excellent too! My dad was in a bad mood and jammed the hose back in ripping it. Well my mom was very mad at him for treating Dyson like that! But she called customer service and they shipped us a new hose, free of charge!

I have the Dyson DC15 ball all floors and I love it! I had a Kenmore canister vacuum beofre that and had some problems with the power bar at one point. I think I dropped it and the whole bottom of it cracked open so I ended up buying the Dyson just after xmas. My SIL has the DC07 and loves hers too ~ I took her word for it since she is a clean freak and her floors always look good to me!

The first time I used the Dyson, I couldn't believe how much stuff it sucked out of the carpet...it was gross!! It was a little hard for me to geet used to, since I have alwys used canister vacuums before ~ I love how I can leave the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs while I vacuum each step with the detachable hose.

I got a good deal on it too....Linen's n Things had it for $499 and I was able to use a 20% off coupon on top of that...best price I have seen for that model anywhere.

Well, Consumer Reports didn't rate Starbucks very highly and some treadmills that deserve a higher rating because they are quality made and better than a run-of-the-mill Precor so you need to take their ratings with a grain of salt. They are not absolute and they are very much geared for affordability.

I just ordered a factory refurb animal from amazon! That's my tax return splurge this year!
I'm not allowed to vacuum according to my allergist, so technically it's DH's splurge :rotfl:

I use Consumer Reports only as a guide. When looking at the ratings, you have to look at the model numbers as not all Sears uprights are made and rated the same, for example. These ratings are not only based on CR's findings but also on surveys filled out by thousands of consumers.

In addition, Consumer Reports doesn't say that the Dyson models are not good vacs but, for example, if a vacuum headlight and suction control are important to you, and cost is a factor, then the Dyson DC15 may not be the vac for you.

With that being said, I still plan on buying the Dyson DC15 with the Ball. :teeth:

I borrowed a friends Dyson when our Kirby's belt broke - I loved it! I like my Kirby too, but I loved how easy the Dyson was to empty, manuever, everything! My dh won't even consider letting my buy another vaccum with as much as our Kirby cost, but if I could I'd get a Dyson in a heartbeat!

Thanks everyone My Dyson arrived today. The color was a little unexpected! The pic. on the amazon showed it purple and silver well, this one is bright green and purple! Yes I love it I did the test and vacuumed with my fantom first and then the dyson WOW it did get so much more hair and stuff I was surprised. Thanks again! :goodvibes

What I don't understand is how the guy can get away with saying it picks up dirt at like, 100,000 times the earths gravity. Wouldn't that rip a hole in the universe!?!?

I've been reading this thread and am still not convinced. For the past 2 weeks I have been researching on the internet for a new vacuum. Dyson does have hype, but when I visited epinions, consumer reports, amazon etc. the reviews didn't convince me that it was the one and only.

The three major things that hold me back on the Dyson are:

1. Bagless. In concept bagless seems dirty, allergenic, and messy. When it's all contained in a bag isn't it more convienient not to mention neater?

2. No long-term Dyson user reviews. I want to hear from people how have had a Dyson for well over a year. I did read a couple of reviews that were from long-term owners and they were not stellar.

3. The expense. You can't tell me that it costs that much to make that vacuum.

Regardless of all this I want to like the Dyson. I have a Golden Retriever and his hair drives me crazy! I need to get a new vacuum soon... my husband is so sick of the hair he is threatening to get rid of the source of it. :rolleyes2
