Dyeing Hair at home.

I have had my hair professionally dyed for the past 6 years. But now my usual stylist is out of the country and I am (and will be) away from my home for 4 months. I need to dye my hair. My roots are starting to show!
I was just wondering what brand is good, and if the brand will work with my dyed hair. (my hair is dyed light brown and my regular color is dark brown). I'm nervous to try it.

I don't know, but I am curious to see the responses. I just cannot afford the cost of salon hair-dyeing anymore! I am very afraid to do it myself though because I don't want to screw it up!

I have used Clairols Nice'n'Easy for over 35 years. I usually buy it when I have coupons and pay about $4 a box! You could try a root touch up (any brand) and see how that works.

The salon I used to go to was charging $170 to do a cut, color and highlights. I was doing color every other time because of the cost, but I like to keep up with the highlights.

I found a girl that does it out of her home now. She has a full, but smaller, salon in her house. She charges me $45 for the same thing and I find I get more of her attention and my hair has never looked better.

It's all trial and error. I had used lorel for years but recently tried nutresse and love it but they don't always have the color that I like. If your not wanting to change your color just cover the roots I would go for a root cover up. They are fast and do a fairly good job. I am assuming that you are going back to your stylist once you are back in town. Otherwise I would go to a different stylist at the same solon. They should have notes on your color ect.
Just remember it's only hair and it will grow and can be re colored.

I like Natural Instincts and the last time I used Loreal Couleur Experte. If I use Natural Instincts, I usually get two different colors, mix half and half of the actual dye into each developer bottle and have at it. I find the mix gives me dimensional color as well.

I usually dye my hair at home because I don't have highlights and its so much more affordable.

I would really watch using any of them.Your going dark to light. So you would need a bleach base and if you don't use that right you could do damage.Maybe find a cheaper salon.

I have very dark hair naturally and have been using Revlon to color it to a lighter brown for years and have never had a problem. I find it at Wal Mart for $2.99 and it lasts on my hair for about 6 weeks. I recently even went back to my almost black original hair color and then back to lighter brown and had no issues.

I prefer Feria. It makes a huge mess. I have long hair so it takes 2 boxes. I put a little vaseline around the hairline on my forehead & ears so I dont dye my skin. You need someone to help you OR a mirror so you can see the back. I use a mirror. If you get dye on your skin wipe it off with shampoo (not water, just a squirt of shampoo). I use clips to separate sections of my hair.

It really makes a big mess, it takes a lot of caution not to get it on the sink or the floor if doing it by yourself. But to me, it is worth the hassle to spend 20 instead of 200.

Wear an old shirt you dont care about, and use an old towel for he same reason.

I make a big mess too. Ive got an old towel that is now all stained LOL that I use just for this. I use the Garnier Nutrisse and like it a lot. It leaves my hair really soft too. I dont have highlights so although having it professionally done is easier and nicer, its just too expensive for me.

Go to a place like Sally's Beauty Supply, most of the workers there are either stylists or former stylists and they can recommend professional quality products similar to what is used at the salon (and yes you can buy the items).

Yes, for years now....always have done it at home. The one thing I do caution about auburn hair is that you really have to pay attention to your skin tone and be careful not to get too red (unless that is what you are going for).

I have found that I like these colors: Perfect 10 (dark auburn), Peferrence (med or dark auburn) and Feraria (Cardinal).

You might want to try a temporary wash-out color first, to see if the auburn color is good for your skin tone. I would agree that a darker color, or even a reddish-brown tone would be better. I am lucky, I have very pale skin and the red hair actually suits me better, but I had naturally red highlights (before my hair started going grey) anyway, so it wasn't too much of a stretch.

I did not read all the responses here, but I work in a salon.

I can give you some great sucess stories, and some horror stories. Over the counter color have one processing solution, salons use different strenght solutions. Just because there's a color chart doesn't mean thats the color you'll get.

Call the salon you use and see if they have the fomula they use on your hair.
